Davis, El Moutaouakkil combine for 40 as Cajuns earn first win

LAFAYETTE – A combined 40 points from newcomers Koron Davis and Mostapha El Moutaouakkil led the Louisiana men's basketball team to their first win of the season, 82-65 over UT Dallas on Thursday in the Cajundome.
Davis, who was scoreless in the team's season opener on Monday, had a huge night for the Ragin' Cajuns. The junior poured in 24 points, on 9-of-15 shooting, while pulling down five rebounds. El Moutaouakkil added 16 points with four rebounds and two steals. Kentrell Garnett also finished in double figures with 11 points and a team-high three steals.
The visiting Comets came out hot and kept the Cajuns off balance. They built an 11-8 lead before Chancellor White tied the game with a three. It was White's first basket since February 16, 2023, and first made three in a game since December 21, 2022, after missing all of last season due to injury.
Kyndall Davis put the Cajuns in front for the first time out of the under-12 media timeout at 15-14 but the Comets refused to go away. The sides traded points until a pair of El Moutaouakkil free throws pushed Louisiana ahead by four at 26-22. The Comets fought back, scoring the next nine points to take a five-point lead late in the half. Louisiana closed the half strong with an 8-1 run capped by a pair from the charity strip from Christian Wright to lead 34-32 after 20 minutes.
Louisiana carried that momentum into the second half. Leading 48-42, the Cajuns scored the next 12 points to pull away. Five players scored in the run, with Jeremiah Evans leading the way with four.
El Moutaouakkil's free throws pushed the lead to 23 with just under eight minutes to play. The Comets would make one more run of their own, cutting the lead to 11 but Kyran Ratliff's basket ended an 8-0 run. From there the Cajuns ran down the clock to claim their first victory of the young season.
Louisiana hits the road for their first away contest of the 2024-25 season. The Ragin' Cajuns will take on No. 4 Houston on Wednesday in the Fertitta Center with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
