Louisiana Takes on Top 10 Houston in First Road Contest of the Season

The Ragin’ Cajuns look for their first win over a top-10 team since 1981
HOUSTON, Texas – The Louisiana men's basketball team hits the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, November 13 as they face No. 8 Houston in the Fertitta Center in Houston. Louisiana looks for their first win over a ranked opponent since 2002.
Last time out the Cajuns came away with an 82-65 win over UT Dallas. Koron Davis had a big night, scoring 24 points and grabbing five rebounds in the effort. Mostapha El Moutaouakkil added 16 points and four rebounds in the win. El Moutaouakkil leads Louisiana in scoring through two games at 13.0 points per game after finishing last season fifth in the NJCAA in scoring at 25.0. Four Cajuns are averaging double figures after the opening week with Kentrell Garnett at 12.5 while Davis (12.0) and Zeke Cook (10.0) have done work off the bench.
No. 8 Houston welcomes the Cajuns for the first time since 2021, a 71-56 victory for the Cougars. The preseason No. 4 team in the nation, the Cougars fell to Auburn last time out, dropping them to No. 8 in Monday's AP Poll.

• Houston enters the week fourth in the country in three-point shooting percentage (.515). Last season Louisiana led the country in three-point percentage defense at .276.
• Louisiana faces Houston for the first time since 2021, a 71-56 win for the then-No. 14 Cougars. Kentrell Garnett scored 12 points off the bench for the Ragin' Cajuns, with nine in the second half.
• This marks the sixth meeting between the schools where Houston is ranked, Louisiana is 2-3 in those contests.
• All-time Louisiana is 10-47 against ranked opponents. The Ragin' Cajuns have lost their last 23 contests against ranked foes, last beating No. 12 Mississippi State, 79-76, on Nov. 23, 2002. That Bulldog team was led by UL assistant coach Derrick Zimmerman.
• Houston comes in ranked No. 8 by the AP Poll. Wednesday marks the first time ever the Ragin' Cajuns will face the No. 8 team in the AP Poll.
• Louisiana is 5-17 (.227) all-time against teams in the top 10. The last of those wins came against No. 5 Georgetown, 70-61, on Nov. 27, 1981. The Hoyas, led by Patrick Ewing and Sleepy Floyd, went on to the NCAA National Championship where they fell to Michael Jordan's UNC Tar Heels 63-62.
• Louisiana is 2-0 all-time against the Cougars when they are ranked inside the top 10, with Houston ranked No. 7 both times. Louisiana beat the Cougars on Dec. 6, 1971, 97-88, and on March 10, 1973, 102-89.
• Bob Marlin and Kelvin Sampson have a combined 1,380 wins. Both are one of five coaches in Division I with 200-plus victories at more than one school, including their current school. Marlin (Louisiana - 267, Sam Houston State - 225), Sampson (Oklahoma - 281, Houston - 265). The other three coaches include Rick Barnes (Texas - 402, Tennessee - 204), Dana Altman (Oregon - 347, Creighton - 327), and Jim Larranaga (George Mason - 273, Miami (FL) - 272). Three other active head coaches have 200 or more wins at multiple Division I institutions, John Calipari (Kentucky - 410, Memphis - 214), Rick Pitino (Louisville - 293, Kentucky - 219), and Fran Dunphy (Penn - 310, Temple - 270).
Louisiana returns to the Cajundome next week to face Rice on Tuesday, November 19.
