Kyran Ratliff dunks against Nicholls

Ratliff’s Monster Day Not Enough to Overcome Nicholls

11/30/2024 7:16:00 PM | Men's Basketball

The sophomore had a huge double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds

LAFAYETTE - A return to the Cajundome and a career day from Kyran Ratliff wasn't enough as the Louisiana men's basketball fell in a tightly contested contest with Nicholls, 76-75, on Saturday. Ratliff set career highs with 25 points and 13 rebounds to record the first double-double of his collegiate career.

The sophomore had a big second half, scoring 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and went 3-for-5 from three. Mostapha El Moutaouakkil scored 19 points for the third straight game, doing most of the damage from the charity stripe with 11 made free throws. He also grabbed six rebounds and had a team-leading three assists. Christian Wright finished with 12 points while Kyndall Davis added eight points and six rebounds.

Louisiana came out of the gates hot. Ratliff scored the first bucket of the game and El Moutaouakkil followed with four points for a 6-0 lead. Nicholls finally got on the board nearly three minutes into the game but Louisiana continued to score. Buckets by Ratliff and Davis before a three by Chancellor White pushed the lead to 12 at 19-7. Minutes later a jumper by London Fields made it a 14-point lead.

The Colonels chipped away at the lead and got within but a 7-0 run, capped by a three-point play by Ratliff, put Louisiana ahead 34-19 with 3:31 to go in the half. Nicholls ended the half strong with an 8-3 run to send it into the half with the Cajuns ahead 39-29.

Nicholls flipped the script in the second half. They scored the first 18 points of the half to lead 47-39. They led by as many as 11 in the second half before the Cajuns found their footing offensively. Ratliff put the team on his back, scoring seven straight, and cut the deficit to four with nine minutes to go.

Wright tied the game at 59 with 7:34 on the clock with a three but back-to-back threes by Nicholls kept them in front. Trailing by six it was Ratliff again from long range with a three to cut the lead in half.

Trailing 74-69 in the final two minutes Kentrell Garnett made back-to-back baskets to trim the deficit to one. After a Ratliff steal, Wright was fouled and hit a pair of free throws to give Louisiana a 75-74 lead with 13 seconds to go. A Louisiana foul on the defensive end sent Nicholls to the line with six seconds left where they hit both free throws to retake a 1-point lead. After a timeout, Garnett drove the length of the floor and his shot at the buzzer came up just short.

Louisiana remains home to take on Louisiana Tech. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on December 7.
