The senior scored a career-high 23 points on Sunday
LAFAYETTE - Kentrell Garnett had a career afternoon for the Louisiana men's basketball team but it wasn't enough as the Cajuns fell to Louisiana Tech 69-58 on Sunday in the Cajundome.
Garnett finished with a career-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting. The senior did most of his damage from deep, going 5-of-8 from three. Kyndall Davis added seven points, seven rebounds, and a pair of assists. Off the bench, Michael Thomas and Zeke Cook each scored seven points.
The senior had it going early. Trailing 9-6, Garnett connected from three on three of four Cajun possessions to hold an 18-16 lead. The sides traded baskets before Cook hit back-to-back buckets for a three-point lead.
Garnett continued to score with a layup at the six-minute mark, followed by baskets from Christian Wright and Mostapha El Moutaouakkil for the largest Cajun lead of the game at 30-25. The Bulldogs found a late offensive rhythm, scoring nine of the next 11 points to take a slim lead. Thomas hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left which sent the game into the locker room tied at 34.
After trading baskets, Garnett put the Cajuns back on top with his fourth three of the game. The Bulldogs scored the next four points to go up 42-39 before both offenses went cold. Neither side scored for almost three and a half minutes until the Bulldogs hit a layup for a five-point lead. The lid remained on the basket for the Cajuns until a layup by Thomas scored their first field goal in nearly eight minutes of action.
Tech would go on an 11-5 run to take a 10-point lead with just under six minutes to play. Louisiana closed the gap within six, but a pair of threes late in the shot clock by the Bulldogs proved to be the difference down the stretch.
Louisiana returns to action on Wednesday against Southeastern Louisiana beginning at 7 p.m. from the Cajundome.
