Louisiana Falls to Georgia State on Senior Day

Makenna Garcia made six saves off the bench

LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana soccer team celebrated its seniors before its final home contest of the 2024 season on Sunday. Despite their efforts and a terrific performance in net by Makenna Garcia, the Cajuns fell 1-0 to Georgia State at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.

The visiting Panthers scored in the 18th minute to take the lead on a deep shot from Aaliyah Faddoul. The teams combined to register just seven shots in the opening half as the sides tried to feel each other out. Coming out of the locker room the Cajuns made the switch in net to Garcia, who had played just six minutes entering the game.

"We brought her in to give us a spark of energy and some intensity back there," head coach Chris McBride said. "She was quick off her line and made some huge early saves and that lifted us a little bit. We just couldn't capitalize on the other end."

Garcia had to make three saves on six shots in her first four minutes on the pitch. The keeper kept the Cajuns in the game as they looked to go on the offensive. The offense never could break through as Louisiana was held to just three shots in the second half.

It was another close game for Louisiana in Sun Belt Conference play. Of their nine completed contests, seven of them have been decided by one goal or resulted in a draw. It was the team's sixth SBC contest allowing one or fewer goals this season.

"It's such a competitive league," said McBride. "It's a great league to be a part of as a coach. Every game is different and every game presents a different challenge. Georgia State had some good wins building up to this game and they challenged and tested us today. It's a great representation of the level of soccer in this conference and when you have as many good teams as we do it's great to be a part of it."

Prior to the game, the Cajuns honored their five seniors Tatum Beck, Lauren Bennett, Lucy Ortiz, Mariella Stephens, and Hailly Waterhouse. Coming into the game those five combined for 334 games, 23,014 minutes, 27 goals, and 14 assists.

"This is the last group that was here through the transition of a coaching change," said McBride. "You have a group of young women that really dig in, want to make the changes to grow and develop, and never said no to anything. We pushed them and put them in situations to grow, and they've done that. They grew themselves and it really made the team grow as well."

Louisiana closes the season on Thursday at Marshall with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
