Beck’s Game-Winner Leads Louisiana in Season Finale

The senior scored the 10th goal of her career in her final game as a Cajun
HUNTINGTON, W.V. - It took some late dramatics but the Louisiana soccer team closed the 2024 season with a 2-1 win over Marshall on Thursday in Huntington, West Virginia. Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Cajuns scored twice in the second half including the game-winner off the left foot of Tatum Beck, playing in the final game of her collegiate career.
"Thought it was a great game of two halves," head coach Chris McBride said. "They did a really good job in the first half of stopping our attack and we were on our heels. We made some changes at halftime and as always we responded well."
Marshall got on the scoreboard first with a penalty kick in a game between two teams who saw their Sun Belt Conference playoff chances end on Sunday. The home side controlled the pace early and the stat sheet reflected that with an 8-4 lead in shots and a 5-0 lead in corner kicks. Despite falling behind early, Louisiana never quit.
"The resilience was spectacular tonight," McBride said. "I think the second half really shows the character of the team, specifically the seniors. It would have been very easy tonight to not give any effort with nothing to play for but they didn't do that. They dug in and had a great second half."
Louisiana found the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Senior captain Lucy Ortiz made a terrific run on a ball heading out of bounds. She was able to save it with a perfect cross to the feet of Sydney Byrnes who ripped it by the keeper to tie the game.
Nearly 20 minutes later with the score still tied, Beck capped off her Cajun career with the perfect ending. The senior dribbled up the pitch, cut back inside, and fired a shot with her left foot from the edge of the box. The ball hit the left post and bounced in to put Louisiana ahead in the 83rd minute.
"The seniors have been great not only tonight but these last three years," said McBride. "I'm very grateful we were able to let them finish with a win tonight. They have laid the foundation for the future of this program."
