Slow Start Not Enough For Cajuns At FAU, 2-1

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Briana Henry lit a spark for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team with her first collegiate goal late in the first half and Natalie Mayes stopped three shots in the second, but Florida Atlantic scored a pair of first-half goals and held on for a 2-1 victory on a rainy Thursday evening at the FAU Soccer Stadium.
Sloane Young and Michelle Horan each scored goals for FAU (2-1-2), ranked No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches South Region poll, in the first 38 minutes of the match while handing Louisiana (3-1-1) its first loss of the season.
Young scored her second goal of the year midway through the 16th minute – and stopping a 301-minute stretch where Louisiana had not allowed a goal – after taking a pass deep into the 6-yard box from Olivia Bori and scoring in the lower, right corner past Makenna Garcia to give the Owls the early lead.
FAU built a 2-0 lead late in the 38th minute after Horan beat Garcia to the lower, left corner of the goal off a pass from Drew Dempsey.
Louisiana picked up its intensity in the latter part of the half as Megan Bradley's thru ball found Henry, who beat FAU goalie Blythe Braun in the lower left corner of the net for her first career goal.
Natalie Mayes posted a shutout in the second half for Louisiana, stopping three shots on frame while Karleen Bedre's shot from outside the 18-yard box sailed left.
Louisiana missed on a couple of chances early in the match as Mariella Stephens' shot deep in the FAU box in the fourth minute sailed just left of the post while Tatum Beck's attempt in the 20th minute was stopped by Braun.
Garcia, who did not give up a goal in 315 minutes of play entering the match, stopped a pair of shots in the first half for Louisiana.
Louisiana will close out its four-match road trip on Sunday when it faces another former Sun Belt Conference rival – Florida International – in a 10 a.m. CT contest at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats available at CajunStats.com.
