Louisiana seeks to rebound from a season-opening 6-1 loss last Sunday (Jan. 15) at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders, ranked No. 41 in the final ITA poll of 2022, took advantage by claiming the doubles point and collecting straight sets sweeps in the first three singles matchups that finished.
Karlo Kajin outlasted TTU's Sebastian Abboud 7-5, 7-5 on Court 5 to earn a season-opening victory for the second straight season. Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez (No. 1 singles) and Kacper Dworak (No. 6 singles) took their foes to a third-set tiebreaker before falling short.
The Ragin' Cajuns are headlined by the No. 1 doubles pairing of Kajin and Sanchez Gonzalez who entered the Spring 2023 dual match campaign ranked No. 30 in the ITA doubles rankings.
Louisiana, although having its entire roster intact from the Spring 2022 success, Is adjusting to a new lineup in both singles and doubles as Oriol Fillat Gimenez, who posted 16 singles and 10 doubles wins last season, is out injured. That leaves Kajin and Sanchez Gonzalez as the lone returning doubles partnership and the need to replace Fillat Gimenez's production at No. 3 singles.
Portland is beginning its spring season during Friday's matchup. For Washington it's the second outing on a week-long homestand, the Huskies defeating Seattle U. on Tuesday (Jan. 17) by a 6-1 count in their debut under the direction of first-year head coach Rahim Esmail.
