Louisiana falls to No. 54 Old Dominion after tight doubles point
ROME, Ga. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team saw its run in the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Championship tournament come to a close on Saturday, April 18, falling to No. 54 Old Dominion, 4-0, in the semifinal round at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia.
Louisiana (11-7) advanced to the semifinal matchup following a 4-1 victory over South Alabama on Friday, but was unable to carry that momentum against the tournament's top seed and three-time defending champion.
The loss snapped Louisiana's season-long, five-match win streak and brought an end to the second season with head coach Thomas Sevel.
The doubles point proved pivotal in the outcome, as the Ragin' Cajuns narrowly missed an early advantage.
After Mason Landreth and Leonard Tramolay delivered a convincing 6-2 win on Court 1, the remaining courts went down to the wire. The decisive match on Court 2 featured Nikola Kolyachev and David Simeonov battling into an extended tiebreaker before being edged, 7-6 (10-8), sealing the doubles point for Old Dominion (19-6).
In singles play, Old Dominion quickly built on its lead. Straight-set victories on Courts 1, 5 and 6 clinched the match, with Landreth, Darius Balan and Kolyachev each facing tough opposition. Several other courts remained competitive, with multiple Ragin' Cajuns forcing split sets before matches were halted.
Despite the loss, Louisiana's late-season surge carried the team to the semifinal round and marked a strong finish. The Ragin' Cajuns conclude the 2026 campaign with an 11-7 overall record, highlighted by a season-best five-match winning streak that carried into the SBC Championship tournament.
