Ragin' Cajuns drop SBC opener to East Division favorite Monarchs

LAFAYETTE – Old Dominion's Megan Watts converted on a penalty kick in the 11th minute and the Monarchs claimed their inaugural match in the Sun Belt Conference with a 1-0 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in the SBC Women's Soccer opener for both teams on Friday at the Home Bank Track/Soccer Complex.

ODU (3-4-1, 1-0-0 SBC), the SBC East Division favorite after claiming the Conference USA crown and NCAA postseason appearance in 2021, held a 15-3 shot advantage on Louisiana (1-4-3, 0-1-0 SBC) and improved to 3-0-1 in its last four matches.

The Monarchs tested Louisiana goalkeeper Libby Harper early in the match as the junior recorded three saves in the first seven minutes. ODU broke through when Watts was fouled inside the 18-yard box and converted on her second goal of the season for the match's lone goal.

Louisiana missed a chance on an equalizer in the 43rd minute when Ruthny Mathurin's shot from just inside the 18-yard box was knocked away by ODU goalkeeper Erin Jones.

The Ragin' Cajuns missed another scoring opportunity in the 47th minute when Mathurin's attempt caromed off the crossbar before ODU was able to regain control of the ball.

Harper, who stopped four shots for Louisiana, collected a save in the 75th minute on Anna Torslov's attempt and forced Malia Mariano's 1-on-1 attempt in the 88th minute to go wide left.

Hailey Hoffmann's desperation shot from 30 yards out just before the final buzzer sailed high as Louisiana played its first match on its home pitch in nearly four weeks.

Louisiana will return to the road for its next SBC match traveling to Atlanta to face Georgia State on Wednesday (Sept. 21) in a 6 p.m. CDT contest.
