Ragin' Cajuns to open regular season on Thursday against FIU
LAFAYETTE – Alyssa Abbott scored a pair of goals in the first half and Tatum Beck added a pair of goals in the second as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team earned an impressive 5-0 win over Southern University in an exhibition match on Saturday at the Home Bank Track/Soccer Facility.

Ruthny Mathurin recorded an assist and an unassisted goal while Lucy Ortiz, Brynn Dunbar and Sisley Stephens each had assists as Louisiana finished 1-0-1 in its first exhibition slate under head coach Chris McBride. The Ragin' Cajuns, who will open their season on Thursday at home against FIU, held a 20-8 advantage in shots against Southern.

Abbott opened the scoring early for Louisiana after taking a crossing pass from Mathurin and scoring past Southern goalkeeper Sydney Bellamy in the fourth minute. Abbott, who scored both goals in Louisiana's exhibition opener against McNeese, added her second goal of the match in the 19th minute after working with Lucy Ortiz and beating Bellamy to the left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Southern missed on a pair of opportunities in the opening half as Deja Griffin's shot was stopped by Libby Harper before her second attempt from the right side of the 18-yard box squirted wide left past Harper.

Mathurin increased Louisiana's lead to 3-0 in the 48th minute when she took a pass away from a Southern defender and scored past Bellamy into the right corner.

Beck scored her first goal of the exhibition season late in the 76th minute after getting a pass from freshman Brynn Dunbar and giving Louisiana a 4-0 advantage. The sophomore, who finished as Louisiana's second-leading scorer last season, then picked up her second goal in the 83rd minute when she was fed a ball by Stephens and scored from inside the 6-yard box.

Harper stopped a pair of shots for Louisiana and combined with redshirt freshman Reese Keller to pitch a clean sheet. Bellamy recorded three saves for the Lady Jags while Griffin, Giftee Tor and Coral Palmer each recorded shots on goal.
