Texas A&M sets team, individual records in claiming second title in tournament history

LAFAYETTE – Freshman Eli Ortego capped off his first appearance at the Louisiana Classics on Tuesday with a 3-under-par 69 and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team fired a team score of 1-under 287 to finish 14th overall at Oakbourne Country Club.
 
Peter Hinnant, who opened with a double bogey at No. 10 before recording par of five of the remaining 17 holes, posted a 3-under 69 in the final round to help Louisiana post its best round in the 54-hole event. The senior made the turn at 1-over-37 on the back nine before shooting a 4-under-32 on the front
 
Charlie Flynn, in his spring debut, posted a score of even-par 72 for the Ragin' Cajuns after making the turn at 2-over with Hudson Dubinski recording a 5-over 77 and Jose Dibildox an 80.
 
Ortego made the turn for Louisiana at 1-under-35 after posting three birdies and a pair of bogeys on the back nine. The Lafayette native then recorded a bogey-free performance on the front nine, collecting birdies at No. 1 and 3 to finish the two-day event at 3-under-213 to earn a tie for 17th place in the event.
 
Hinnant posted a score of 2-over 218 for Louisiana with Flynn (222), Dibildox (229) and Dubinski (232) following for the Ragin' Cajuns. Hunter Hammett paced the Ragin' Cajuns "B" team after shooting a 2-over-par 74 and finishing at 6-over-222. Jake Marler and Matt Weber each recorded rounds of 1-over-73 for Louisiana with Marler finishing at 225 and Weber at 226.
 
Justin Caldwell carded a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish at 228 overall for Louisiana while freshman Burke Alford posted a 6-over-78 to finish at 238.
 
First-day leader Texas A&M maintained its lead and claimed its second team title in the tournament's history with a record-setting performance. The No. 21-ranked Aggies posted a 54-hole record total of 47-under-817 to break the previous mark (41-under-823) by Illinois in the 2021 event. No. 25-ranked LSU was second in the event 12 strokes back at 35-under-829 with North Texas (844), No. 17 Ole Miss (851) and Houston (856) rounding out the top five.
 
Sam Bennett of Texas A&M, the No. 2-ranked golfer in the country by GolfStat, smashed the individual 54-hole record after finishing at 18-under-198 and breaking the previous mark (13-under-203) set by the Illinois tandem of Thomas Detry (2015) and Jerri Ji (2021). The Madisonvlle, Texas native became the sixth Texas A&M golfer to win medalist honors at the Louisiana Classics joining Dan Erickson (2018), Ryan Palmer (1998), Anthony Rodriguez (1995), Marco Gortana (1993) and Jorge Coghlan (1986).
 
Louisiana will return to action beginning on Monday when it travels to Humble, Texas to compete in The All-American Intercollegiate (March 21-22) at the Golf Club of Houston.
