Another solid effort in singles carries Ragin' Cajuns past UTSA and to ninth straight win
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team posted a 4-3 win over UTSA on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, landing the team the tournament title at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions and a ninth consecutive victory overall.
With the win, Louisiana (10-1) completed its three-match march to the championship of the H-E-B Tournament of Champions. The Ragin' Cajuns posted wins of 4-1 over Abilene Christian and 4-3 over ETSU on Friday to set up Saturday's title bout with UTSA (5-3).
The nine-match win streak, which began back on Jan. 28 at Cajun Courts, is Louisiana's longest streak since claiming 10 straight during the 2014 season (March 14-April 20, 2014) - the last time the program advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The win over the Roadrunners also continued the program's best start to a season in the 2000s era.
For the third time in as many outings in Corpus Christi, the Ragin' Cajuns weren't phased after dropping the doubles point. Louisiana went on to win four of the six singles matchups and it was Oriol Fillat Gimenez clinching a quality win for the squad for the second straight outing after he finished off Sebastian Rodriguez 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Fillat Gimenez's win on Court 3, his eighth consecutive triumph at the position, finished off the Ragin' Cajuns rally from a 3-1 match deficit which began when Vasil Dimitrov claimed a pair of tiebreakers from Maxim Groysman at No. 6 singles for a 7-6, 7-6 sweep.
The comeback allowed Louisiana to avenge a 6-1 loss at the hands of UTSA back on Jan. 16 in San Antonio, Texas.
Louisiana finished with an impressive 12-4 mark in singles play throughout its run to the tournament title. For the season, the Ragin' Cajuns stand at 40-17 in singles play as a group.
