Cajuns Men Roll Past Norfolk State in Home Debut

LAFAYETTE - The No. 75-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team used a clutch doubles finish to set the tone and then won five of six singles matches to defeat Norfolk State, 6-1, on Sunday, March 1 at Cajun Courts.

The victory marked a successful home debut at Cajun Courts for Louisiana (6-4) and capped off the team's first week in the Acadiana area this spring on a winning note. Coupled with the women's team's 4-0 sweep earlier in the day, UL posted a doubleheader sweep of Norfolk State.

Louisiana secured the opening point in dramatic fashion as the doubles decision came down to the final court.

After Samuel Kyjaci and David Simeonov earned a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles and Norfolk State (2-3) answered on Court 1, the point was decided at No. 3. The Ragin' Cajuns' duo of Darius Balan and Gianluca Filoramo delivered in the deciding match, edging the Spartans' Boris Lunin and Dominik Simunovic, 7-5, to clinch the doubles point.

UL carried that momentum into singles play, where multiple matches stretched into decisive third sets.

Kyjaci added to the match lead with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles before Filoramo rallied from a first-set deficit to defeat Kasper Kulpa, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6, building a commanding 3-0 edge.

Leonard Tramolay secured the team victory for Louisiana with a hard-fought win at No. 2 singles, defeating Szymon Malecki, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, to clinch the match before the remaining courts finished.

Norfolk State's lone point came from Dominik Simunovic at No. 5 singles.

Mason Landreth ended the Ragin' Cajuns successful night, and gained the team's final point, completing a comeback victory at the top spot by rallying past Marcin Andrzejczak, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-2.

Louisiana opens a three-match road swing on Sunday, March 8 in Troy, Alabama, facing the Trojans in a 10:00 a.m. match at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.

The Ragin' Cajuns then travel to San Antonio, Texas the weekend of March 15-16 for matches at Incarnate Word and UTSA before returning to Cajun Courts on Friday, March 20 to face Alcorn.
