Louisiana tandem defeats LSU pair and clinches doubles point vs. Norfolk State
LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team's newly formed doubles pairing of Darius Balan and Gianluca Filoramo has been named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week after producing impressive victories in an undefeated week.
Competing together on Court 3, the tandem posted a 2-0 record for the week and remained unbeaten since first teaming up on February 21 at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Balan and Filoramo (3-0) opened the week with a victory over No. 7-ranked LSU's Rudy Ceccon and Matias Ponce De Leon during last Thursday's matchup at the Youngsville Sports Complex. The win over the Tigers' duo highlighted the pair's growing chemistry in the lineup.
They followed that performance with another clutch result on Sunday, helping Louisiana (6-4) secure the doubles point in a 6-1 victory over Norfolk State. Facing Boris Lunin and Dominik Simunovic on Court 3, the Cajuns duo delivered a hard-fought 7-5 triumph to clinch the doubles point for Louisiana.
The match featured a tightly contested battle, with the score tied five different times. Each time the Spartans pulled even, Balan and Filoramo responded by reclaiming the lead, ultimately closing out the match with the decisive break.
Their steady play has provided an important boost to Louisiana's doubles lineup, the Ragin' Cajuns now standing 7-2 on Court 3 and 15-11 overall as a team in double action.
It's the second SBC Doubles Team of the Week recognition for Louisiana this season, the team's No. 1 tandem of Mason Landreth and Leonard Tramolay previously recognized on February 18.
The Ragin' Cajuns open a three-match road swing on Sunday, March 8 in Troy, Alabama, facing the Trojans in a 10:00 a.m. match at the Lunsford Tennis Complex. That will be followed by a trip to San Antonio, Texas the weekend of March 15-16 for matches at Incarnate Word and UTSA before returning to Cajun Courts on Friday, March 20 to face Alcorn.
