Winners of nine straight the Ragin' Cajuns aim to build off H-E-B Tournament of Champions title
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - One week removed from capturing the H-E-B Tournament of Champions title, the 39th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 seeking to continue its winning ways when the squad meets Southern Miss at 1 p.m. from the Southern Miss Tennis Complex.
Louisiana (10-1) enters the USM contest on a nine-match winning streak, which began back on Jan. 28 at Cajun Courts and is the program's longest such streak since the 2014 season. During the win streak the Ragin' Cajuns have claimed wins over No. 50 Texas Tech, No. 62 UTSA and No. 65 Rice, climbing inside the Top 40 of the ITA's Division I Men's National Team Rankings.
Saturday's matchup with the Golden Eagles (2-3) marks the Ragin' Cajuns' final stop in a February-long road stretch of matches. Louisiana's long-awaited return home is set for Saturday, March 5 when Coastal Carolina visits Cajun Courts for the Sun Belt Conference opener.
The road-tested Ragin' Cajuns previous stops this month were all in the state of Texas: Houston (Feb. 5-6), Lubbock (Feb. 11-12) and Corpus Christi (Feb. 18-19).Â
Last weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions the Ragin' Cajuns continued adding quality wins to their resume by defeating ETSU and UTSA in the winner's bracket on the way to the tournament championship.Â
ABOUT LOUISIANA
Louisiana is off to its best start in the 2000s era and has done so under the guidance of first-year head coach Luc Godin. Outstanding performances in singles competition has been the hallmark of the team's success so far, most recently finishing 12-4 in singles play to claim the H-E-B Tournament of Champions title. For the season, the Ragin' Cajuns stand at 40-17 in singles play as a group.
Â
Individually, the play of Oriol Fillat Gimenez has sparked the stretch of winning as he stands 9-1 on the season at No. 3 singles and clinched the wins over ETSU and UTSA at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions. While Fillat Gimenez has won eight straight in singles play, teammate Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez (7-2 at singles No. 2) has won five straight of his own including wins in the ETSU and UTSA matches that kept the Ragin' Cajuns track for the H-E-B title.Â
Vasil Dimitrov (8-3) and Calin Postea (7-2) join FIllat Gimenez and Sanchez Gonzalez as team members who have posted seven or more wins in singles play.
At the No. 1 position, Karlo Kajin has held his own as well sporting a 4-3 mark while extending play long enough for the remainder of the group to clinch matches.
A LOOK AT SOUTHERN MISS
The Golden Eagles, closing out a five-match homestand, have lost back-to-back matches after dropping a 4-1 decision to UAB last Sunday.Â
Christoper Cahour's two wins are tied for the most by a Golden Eagle in singles competition with Antoine Audrain, Olimjon Nabiev and Alan Sanson. Shamirul Shahril and Dhruv Sunish lead USM at the top doubles spot with a 3-2 mark.
