Louisiana earns first home win over Troy since 2006, leapfrogs into fourth place in SBC West
LAFAYETTE – Ruthny Mathurin recorded the first multi-goal match of her career and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team scored twice in a five-minute span in the second half to claim a 3-1 victory over Troy in the regular-season home finale on Thursday at the Home Bank Track/Soccer Complex.
Â
Libby Harper stopped seven shots as she joined teammates Perri Belzer and Anna Grassinger in playing in her final home match as Louisiana (3-7-5, 2-4-2 SBC) leapfrogged Troy (3-8-3, 1-6-2 SBC), Southern Miss and ULM in the SBC West Division. The Ragin' Cajuns, which defeated Troy at home for the first time since a 1-0 overtime decision on Oct. 22, 2006, produced the second straight three-goal match after earning a 3-0 win at ULM last Sunday.
Â
Mathurin, who has scored seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) of her team-high 13 points in the last two matches, gave Louisiana a 1-0 lead when her corner kick towards the near post went through the hands of Troy goalkeeper Lindsey LaRoche and trickled in for her fourth goal of the season.
Â
After Troy's Ella Owen knocked in a goal off an attempted clear out by Harper in the 19th minute, the Ragin' Cajuns would put the match away with a pair of goals in the second half.
Â
Karleen Bedre's corner kick deep into the Troy box was battled for in a scrum before Alyssa Abbott poked in a second attempt past LaRoche in the 52nd minute to post her first game-winning goal since an overtime win against South Alabama in 2020.
Â
Mathurin added her second goal of the match – and team-high fifth of the season – when she blasted a left-footed blast past LaRoche in the 57th minute for a 3-1 lead.
Â
Louisiana held a 17-14 advantage in shots against Troy, including a 14-6 edge in the second half along with a season-best 13 shots on goal. Mathurin and Abbott each attempted four shots for the Ragin' Cajuns with Brynn Dunbar, Mariella Stephens combining for six shots (5 on-goal).
Â
Hailly Waterhouse, Karleen Bedre and freshman Megan Bradley each posted shots on-goal for Louisiana, which reached double figures in shots on-goal for the second time this season.
Â
LaRoche stopped 10 shots – one off her career-high – for Troy while Owen attempted five of the Trojans' 14 shots in the contest. Jordan Stack added three shots for Troy, which fell to 0-3-1 in its last four matches.
Â
Louisiana will play its final two matches of the regular season on the road beginning on Sunday (Oct. 23) when it faces App State in a 10 a.m. CDT match in Boone, N.C. The Ragin' Cajuns will then close out the regular season on Oct. 27 in a 2 p.m. contest at Southern Miss.
