Louisiana wraps up SEC road trip on Sunday at No. 17 Tennessee
LEXINGTON, Ky. – First-half goals by Marissa Bosco and Hannah Richardson combined with three more scores in the second half carried Kentucky to a 5-0 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team on Thursday at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
Â
Ulfa Ulfarsdottir added a pair of assists while Laura Nielsen stopped a pair of shots as Kentucky (2-0-1) won its second straight match after opening the season last week with a 1-1 tie at Big 10 member Purdue. Louisiana, playing the second of three straight road matches against schools from the Southeastern Conference, fell to 1-2-0 on the season.
Â
Louisiana opened the match with a pair of shot attempts by Lizzie Mayfield, including one that bounced off the left post after the Ragin' Cajuns forced Kentucky into an errant pass. Mayfield, who played a season-high 82 minutes, took four of Louisiana's season-high nine shots against an improved Kentucky squad.
Â
Bosco would give Kentucky a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute after taking a pass from Miranda Jimenez and placing a ball past Louisiana goalkeeper Libby Harper into the lower right corner of the goal.
Â
Richardson scored the first of her two goals for the Wildcats in the 33rd minute after Ulfarsdottir set up the goal with a pass to Maria Olsen, who would then find an open Richardson just outside the 18-yard box for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Kentucky extended its lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute after the Ragin' Cajuns defense attempted to clear out a ball inside the 18-yard box, but the ball was knocked over Harper and into the back of the net for an own goal.
Â
Jordyn Rhodes added her team-best fourth goal of the season for Kentucky in the 67th minute after taking a well-placed pass from Ulfarsdottir before Richardson closed out the scoring in the 88th minute with an unassisted goal.
Â
Kentucky, which has outscored its opposition 9-1 in its first three matches, held a 21-9 advantage in shots which included 13 attempts on goal. Harper stopped nine shots for Louisiana, matching her career-best which was set during her freshman season at Akron in 2019.
Â
Louisiana will wrap up its three-match road swing through the SEC on Sunday when it visits No. 17-ranked Tennessee in a 1 p.m., EDT contest.
