Ragin' Cajuns In Eighth After Day One at SBC Championships

Three teams break 300-barrier as course grinds out high scores

EL DORADO, Ark. – Mystic Creek Golf Club – 1. Sun Belt Conference Golfers – None.
 
Bjorn Gudjonsson recorded a 4-over-par 76 and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team finished the first day in eighth place after the opening round of the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championships on Sunday at Mystic Creek Golf Club.
 
In an opening round that saw two golfers in the 60-player field finish below par with three of the 12 teams posting scores below 300 after 18 holes, Louisiana posted a team score of 312 to finish six strokes behind Coastal Carolina for seventh place and seven shots behind the fifth-place tandem of Appalachian State and UT Arlington.
 
Peter Hinnant carded a score of 5-over 77 for the Ragin' Cajuns with Hudson Dubinski posting a 6-over 78 and the tandem of Charlie Flynn and Hunter Hammett each carding an 81.
 
Gudjonsson opened the day for the Ragin' Cajuns with a 1-over 37 on the front nine picking up his lone birdies of the day at No. 4 and No. 6. The junior remained at 1-over through 12 holes before a bogey at No. 13 before consecutive bogeys at No. 16 and 17 to fall back in the standings.
 
Hinnant posted a 4-over 40 on the front nine before finishing at 1-over 37 for Louisiana on the back nine which included a birdie at No. 11. Dubinski was 5-over through nine holes before posting a 1-over 37 on the back nine, which was highlighted by a pair of birdies including the par-5, No. 18.
 
No. 43-ranked Georgia Southern, the top seed in the 12-team field, posted a 5-over 293 to claim the first-day lead with ULM (295), Little Rock (298), Arkansas State (302), Appalachian State (305) and UTA (305) following.
 
ULM's Mickel Schmitt navigated the tough course with precision in the opening round, posting a 6-under-par 66 with Little Rock's Logan Pate five strokes back with a 71. Three golfers - Ben Carr of Georgia Southern, App State's Sverrir Haraldsson and Daniel Cronje of UTA – fired an even-par 72 in the opening round.
 
The second round will begin at 8:30 a.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+ and live results available at GolfStat.com and RaginCajuns.com. Louisiana, which will tee off from No. 1 beginning at 9:15 a.m., will be paired with Coastal Carolina and Texas State in the second round.
