Louisiana Athletics has teamed up with RoadRunnerApp.com to offer a new series on RaginCajuns.com in which student-athletes share details on how they've adjusted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and offer insight into their personal lives.
In this Q&A feature article, you will "Get to Kneaux" Ragin' Cajuns soccer midfielder Julianne DeBlieux. The Houma, La., native has appeared in 40 career matches at Louisiana with 30 career starts. The returning co-captain started in all 20 matches last season for Louisiana and helping the Ragin' Cajuns to a 9-8-3 record and a semifinal berth in the Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer Championships.
What was your daily routine during quarantine?
JD: "My daily quarantine routine consists of waking up around 7:30 and drinking tea while I attended my classes via zoom. Then I would go to physical therapy with Una (Einarsdottir). Then we come back and work out using my handmade squat rack. We follow that up with a smoothie (a major highlight of the day). Then, I did whatever school work I needed to or sit by the pool."
What has Head Coach Key's message to your team been during this unprecedented time?
JD: "I think the biggest message from Coach Key has been focusing on building our castle. We have so much time to ourselves during this time, so it's a great time to really focus on becoming a better version of ourselves every day in everything we do."
How have you and your teammates stuck together remotely during this challenging time period?
JD: "Throughout the quarantine, I've kept in touch with my teammates using basically all the forms of media and zoom. We have quiz night every Thursday which is a highlight. We also have family meetings once a week to catch up which is great because we get to know the new girls coming in as well."
An important question: what is your favorite food?
JD: "My favorite food has got to be tacos."
Take us back to when you decided to come to the University and become a Ragin' Cajun. What about the school helped you make that decision?
JD: "When I was deciding to be a Ragin' Cajun, I think what stood out most to me was that it the culture here is unlike anywhere else. It's a big, Cajun family, and everyone welcomes you in with open arms."
What is your earliest sports memory?
JD: "My earliest sports memory would have to be when I was probably around 5 or 6 on my team, the Jaguars, and getting snacks after all of our games."
Growing up, your sports hero was who? And why?
JD: "Growing up my sports hero was probably Julie Johnston, or as she's known now as Julie Ertz. I've always played similar positions as she did so I really enjoyed watching her play for the national team."
What is your major, and what about it do you like most?
JD: "I am majoring in Exercise Science with a concentration in Pre-Professional Studies, Pre Physical Therapy. What I like most about it is that I get to learn the anatomy and physiology of the body and how it coincides with the overall preparation and performance of athletes. It helps me to understand all the factors that go into being a healthy collegiate athlete."
What class have you enjoyed most at the University so far?
JD: "The class I've enjoyed the most thus far has been Anatomical Kinesiology. It focused on body movements and the anatomy behind it. It was super cool to get a glimpse into some information that I will probably use the rest of my life."
What are your plans after your academic and athletic career at Louisiana is done?
JD: "After I graduate from UL, I plan to attend physical therapy school. I'm not sure where I'll go yet, but I'm very excited for the adventure that this next chapter will bring."
