Louisiana has now dropped four-straight contests ahead of Saturday’s Pink Game

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana played well for the majority of Thursday night's conference showdown with Georgia State, but a costly 7:36 scoreless stretch in the second half saw the Panthers leave the Cajundome with a 61-53 win over the Ragin' Cajuns.

It was a tale of two halves for the Ragin' Cajuns, which opened the game shooting 56.5 percent (13-23) from the floor in the first half. However, the offense sputtered in the second half, scoring just 19 points and shooting 21.4 percent (6-for-28) from the field.

Three different Ragin' Cajuns scored in double figures in the defeat, led by a 12-point performance from Jomyra Mathis. Ty'Reona Doucet and Skyler Goodwin added 11 points apiece, with Doucet leading the way on the glass with six of Louisiana's 28 rebounds.

The two teams traded buckets throughout the first quarter before two triples from Mathis allowed Louisiana take a 17-16 after ten minutes. Georgia State opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run before two free throws from Goodwin pulled the Ragin' Cajuns within 23-21 with 6:31 on the clock.

Louisiana's offense picked up the momentum late and finished off the final 3:21 of the second quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 34-32 lead at the break.

With the all-important momentum on their side, Kimberly Burton hit a jumper in the paint to open a 45-38 advantage at the 4:21 mark of the third quarter. Georgia State struck back, though, and closed the period on a 9-0 run to take a 47-45 lead with 10 minutes to play.

Sophomore Andrea Cournoyer scored six of her eight points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter with two 3-pointers to cut the lead to 54-51. That was as close as Louisiana could get after the visitors finished the game with a 7-2 run to win 61-53.

Louisiana wraps up its three-game homestand in the Cajundome on Saturday, Feb. 15, when it hosts Georgia Southern for its annual Pink Game. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on RaginCajuns.com/Watch and broadcast on 960 AM.

Prior to the game, the team will hold the 2020 Andrea Brodhead Foundation Cancer Walk at 11 a.m. More information on how to sign up for the event or how to support the Andrea Brodhead Foundation can be found here.
