Starwood records eight saves as Ragin' Cajuns pitch school-record fourth straight shutout
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Gwen Mummert broke a scoreless tie in the 26th minute while Lizzie Mayfield recorded a goal and an assist as Louisiana posted a 2-0 victory over Little Rock in a Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer match on Friday at the Coleman Sports Complex.
Freshman Lauryn Starwood stopped a season-high eight shots and helped Louisiana (6-3-0, 3-2-0 SBC) pitch its school-record fourth consecutive shutout and improve to 2-0-3 in its last five matches against Little Rock (1-4-0, 1-2-0 SBC).
Mummert gave Louisiana a 1-0 lead when her header off a corner kick attempt by Mayfield got past Little Rock goalkeeper Saskia Wagner for her second goal of the season.
Mayfield, who recorded her third match this season with a goal and assist, padded the Ragin' Cajuns lead to 2-0 just before intermission when she took a feed from Grace Champagne and scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year in the 44th minute.
That would be more than enough for Starwood, who improved to 4-1 on the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.20 in five matches. The freshman, who recorded a combined nine saves in her first four contests, was tested early by Little Rock in the first half with six saves before stopping a pair of attempts by the Trojans after halftime.
Louisiana placed eight of its 12 shot attempts on-goal with Wagner recording six saves for the Trojans. Mayfield, Mummert and Karleen Bedre combined to attempt 10 shots for the Ragin' Cajuns with Champagne and Rachel Sutter each recording one attempt.
Little Rock held an 18-12 advantage in shots with Peyton Laughley taking six attempts for the Trojans.
Louisiana will wrap up its trip to the state of Arkansas on Sunday when it visits Southland Conference member Central Arkansas (5-1-1) in a 1 p.m., contest in Conway, Ark.
