Louisiana opens 20th Sun Belt Conference slate against rival Jaguars

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team opens its 20th season of Sun Belt Conference soccer on Sunday when it faces rival South Alabama in a 1 p.m. contest at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex.
 
The match will be televised live on Cox Sports Television and available on ESPN+ with Cody Junot (pxp) and former Ragin' Cajuns soccer letterwinner Rebecca Foley (color) providing commentary. Live results will be available at CajunStats.com.
 
Admission is free and fans are encouraged to bring their dogs for "Pups at the Pitch."
 
Louisiana (4-3-1, 0-0 SBC) returns to action after having its four-match win streak snapped last Sunday in a 2-1 double overtime contest at Northwestern State. Rainey Niles scored her first career goal in the contest for the Ragin' Cajuns, who rank second in the Sun Belt Conference in shots attempted (111) and third in goals scored (15).
 
Skyla Sykes and freshman Karleen Bedre have scored a team-high three goals each to lead the Ragin' Cajuns with Bedre adding a team-high four assists on the season. Una Einarsdottir, Gwen Mummert and Katherine Whitman have provided two goals each for Louisiana with goalkeeper Mackenzie Lee recording 27 saves and a 1.82 goals against average in eight matches.
 
South Alabama (6-2-1, 1-0 SBC) opened league play with a 1-0 double overtime victory at preseason favorite Texas State on Thursday on Ana Helmert's goal in the 109th minute. The Jaguars are led by Briana Morris' eight goals and 17 points on the season with Helmert adding four goals. Goalkeeper Justice Stanford has saves 27 shots this season for South Alabama while posting a 0.78 goals against average.

SAVES AND CLEAN SHEETS ...
• The shutout of Nicholls on Sept. 11 was the sixth for Mackenzie Lee in her career, moving her into a tie with Cosette Morche (2015-16) for fourth-place on the all-time list.
• With 12 career victories between the posts, Lee can pass Morche for sole possession of fourth place on the Ragin' Cajuns all-time list.
• Lee is nine saves shy of tying Anne Corbello (144 saves - 2000) for sixth place in school history.
 
AWAY FROM THE FRIENDLY CONFINES
• Eleven of Louisiana's 18 regular-season matches are being played away from the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex, including six of the first seven matches.
• The opening stretch of matches in 2019 marks the first time since 2008 that Louisiana will play one home match in its first seven contests of the season.
• The 2008 squad opened the season at home against Southeastern Louisiana before playing its next seven on the road.
 
THE KEY TO WINNING
