Cajuns Win Streak Ends In 2-1 Loss At Northwestern State

Louisiana opens Sun Belt Conference play on Sunday at home against South Alabama
NATCHITOCHES – Olivia Draguicevich's goal in the final minute of the second overtime helped Northwestern State rally from a halftime deficit and snap the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns four-match win streak with a 2-1 decision on Sunday at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.

Draguicevich scored both goals for Northwestern State (3-5-0), which won its third straight match that included a 1-0 victory over Sun Belt Conference preseason favorite Texas State on Friday. Louisiana, which was looking for its school-record fifth consecutive victory overall and seventh straight win over the Demons, fell to 4-3-1 overall.

Louisiana took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute of the match when Telly Vunipola scored placad a shot that sailed past NSU goalkeeper Acelya Aydogmus into the back corner of the net.

Draguicevich tied the match at 1-1 in the 58th minute when she took a pass from Olivia Mattsson deep in the box and scored past Mackenzie Lee. The duo would team up again in the second overtime after Draguicevich came out of a scramble with the ball in the NSU zone and placed a shot past Lee in the lower right corner of the goal for the match-winner.

Kayla Bomben relieved Aydogmus in goal for the Demons in the second half, stopping four shots overall, including three in the first overtime on a pair of shots by Karleen Bedre and an attempt by Vunipola.

Lee stopped five shots for Louisiana while Bedre attempted a team-high three shots in the match. NSU held an 11-9 advantage in shots and held Louisiana without a corner kick for the first time this season.

Louisiana will open Sun Belt Conference play on Sunday (Sept. 22) when it plays host to South Alabama in a 1 p.m. contest at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex. The match will be televised live on Cox Sports Television and steamed live on ESPN+. Admission to all home soccer matches is free.
