SAN FRANCISCO – Louisiana Women's Tennis (5-5), making its first trip to the West Coast in over a decade, dropped the first two matches it played over the weekend, falling 4-2 to San Francisco (6-4) on March 2 and losing 4-3 to Pacific (1-3) on March 3 with both matches being played at the San Francisco Tennis Club.
In both matches Louisiana was extremely competitive, with the match against Pacific being decided late in singles and Louisiana's matchup with San Francisco coming down to a three-set battle in singles. Despite the outcomes for Louisiana the two matches showed the fight of the Ragin' Cajuns.
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. USF): Louisiana's match against San Francisco began and finished in singles, with freshman Hoda Habib dropping her match against Emily Maxfield, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles to give USF an early 1-0 lead. The Dons got a 2-0 lead at No. 6 when junior Milena Achlamov fell to Amber Del Rosario, 6-1, 6-3.
Louisiana got on the board with a straight set win from junior Marina Rodriguez Garica at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4, over Hanna Borjeson. The score was tied up at No. 5 with a straight set, 6-3, 6-2, win by junior Clara Mantaux over Shanna Dos Santos.
With the match squared up at 2-2, the deciding points came down to No. 1 and No. 4 singles where, despite dropping the points, Louisiana would put up a strong fight. The next point came at No. 1, where sophomore Floriane Picaut fell to Mya Bui, 6-3, 7-6(5), but it took a highly contested tiebreaking by Picaut to wrap up the match, but it did give San Francisco a 3-2 lead.
At No. 4, sophomore Dana Radovanovic battled through three sets with Margarita Treyes, falling 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Radovanovic nearly completed a big comeback, taking the second set to force a third set, but the Louisiana sophomore ran out of gas and the result of the match gave San Francisco a 4-2 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Pacific): The match against the Tigers began with doubles, and Pacific got the first win in doubles, when at No. 3 doubles the duo of Picaut and Garcia lost to the Pacific pairing of Vyrlan and Vinolas, 6-2. Louisiana answered with a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles by Habib and Fabre over the Pacific duo of Nederstigt and Lopez, making the match at No. 1 doubles the deciding match for doubles.
At No. 1, Louisiana would fall, but the Ragin' Cajuns' pairing of Radovanovic and Mantaux put up a fight, despite the Louisiana duo's efforts the final points in doubles would fall the way of the Tigers. Facing the Pacific pairing of Tan and Lee, the Louisiana duo fell 7-5, and the resulting doubles point meant that Pacific took a 1-0 lead into singles.
In singles Louisiana tied things up, 1-1, when Garcia won at No. 3 when Jacquie Tan withdrew from the match. At No. 1, Picaut took down Anneroos Nederstigt in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to give Louisiana a 2-1 lead early in singles.
At No. 2, Pacific got its first singles win, when Habib fell to Dohee Lee, 6-2, 6-2. But Louisiana bounced back to take a 3-2 lead, when at No. 6 singles freshman Ai Noa Fabre knocked off Anna Vinolas Ramos in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
But Pacific would work its way back into the match, with a win at No. 4 when Radovanovic fell to Karina Vyrlan, 6-2, 7-5, to put the score at 3-3. The deciding match in singles, and the match came at No. 5 when Mantaux dropped her match to Maya Lopez in a three-set battle.
Mantaux took the first set, 6-2, but she would drop the next two sets, eventually losing the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Lopez. The result tied the score at 3-3 and meant that the match would be ultimately decided in doubles.
