Cajuns rally through singles play before Cowgirls secure deciding point

LAKE CHARLES – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Tennis team battled down to the wire in Lake Charles on Tuesday April 7, but came up just short in a 4–3 decision to McNeese at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.

Louisiana (12–5) showed resilience throughout the match in its first road contest since late-February, rebounding after doubles to push the Cowgirls (19-1) to the brink in singles play before the hosts secured the deciding point on Court 5.

In doubles, the pairing of Angelique Berrat and Nina Krecklenberg delivered a commanding 6–1 victory on Court 1 to record their team-leading 10th doubles victory and even the opening segment of the contest. McNeese, though, answered with a win on Courts 2 to take the early point.

Berrat delivered a quick and timely response for UL in singles after the Cowgirls took the opening court, earning a 6–3, 6–2 victory over Salome Fluri on Court 1 to get the Ragin' Cajuns on the board.

The win was Berrat's team-leading 12th of the season, extending her single-season career-best total. It also represented the 40th singles victory of her career and stretched her personal win streak to 10 consecutive matches.

Moments later, Marilou Bressan added another point for Louisiana with a steady 6–2, 6–4 triumph on Court 3, forging a 2-2 tie in the match and securing her third consecutive singles victory.

Safia Zenbi delivered one of the day's most dramatic moments on Court 2. After dropping the opening set, Zenbi rallied to take the second before prevailing in a tense third-set tiebreak, 8–6, to even the overall match at 3–3.

With the match hanging in the balance, McNeese's Erica Hagi clinched the contest for the Cowgirls after completing a three-set comeback win over Nina Krecklenberg on Court 5.

Louisiana narrowly missed out on extending its win total in the program's third double-digit win season with head coach Stephanie Vallejos and first since 2018. McNeese, regular season champions of the Southland Conference, extended its winning streak to 14 matches.
