Three-set rally seals Louisiana’s shutout of Troy, ending Trojans’ seven-match win streak
LAFAYETTE – On her Senior Day, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Tennis standout Angelique Berrat delivered the moment that mattered most.
Berrat rallied from a set down to defeat Troy's Maria Guirguis, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2, clinching the Ragin' Cajuns 4-0 sweep of the Trojans on Saturday, April 11 at Cajun Courts.
The Senior Day triumph not only sealed the dual match but also snapped Troy's seven-match winning streak – handing the Trojans their first loss against an SBC foe – and marked Louisiana's third win over a Sun Belt Conference opponent this spring. Overall, the Ragin' Cajuns (13-5) finished the regular season with their 11th win the last 13 outings.
Facing one of the league's toughest players, Berrat (13-1) handed Guirguis her first loss of the season on Court 1. Guirguis entered the match a perfect 14-0 in the top singles position, but Berrat flipped the momentum after the opening set, dominating the final two frames to secure the decisive point and record her 11th consecutive match victory.
Berrat concluded her final collegiate regular season with an impressive 13-1 record – all on Court 1. Saturday's win extended her personal single-season record for total singles victories.
Louisiana set the tone early by claiming the doubles point. Berrat teamed with Nina Krecklenberg for a 6-2 win on Court 1, giving UL the early edge. Later with the doubles point up for grabs, Ana Martinez Vaquero and Safia Zenbi posted a 6-4 victory on Court 2 to give the Cajuns the 1-0 match lead.
In singles play, Martina Della Gora and Rocio Navarro quickly extended the lead. Della Gora cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win on Court 5, and Navarro added a 6-2, 6-1 decision on Court 6, pushing Louisiana within one point of the match.
That set the stage for Berrat's Senior Day heroics.
With several matches still in progress, Berrat's comeback on Court 1 provided the finishing touch, lifting the Cajuns to a statement victory to close out the regular season home slate.
Troy dropped to 11-7 overall with the loss.
