LAFAYETTE – An offensive outpouring in the second quarter proved to be the difference for Louisiana, which topped Mississippi College, 73-65, in its first exhibition of the 2019-20 season on Monday night at the Cajundome.
Trailing 18-11 after the first 10 minutes of action, the Ragin' Cajuns outscored the Lady Choctaws, 26-10, in the second period to take a lead that they held for the remainder of the contest. Sophomore Andrea Cournoyer led the charge for the Ragin' Cajuns, scoring a team-high 19 points in the contest, 10 of which came in the second stanza.
Fellow sophomore Diamond Morrison had a big evening with 15 points, while newcomer Makayia Hallmon poured in 11 points. The duo, along with Cournoyer, helped Louisiana to a 46 percent (28-of-61) field goal percentage in the contest.
Kimberly Burton and Jasmine Thomas also produced notable performances after both missed the 2018-19 campaign. Burton finished the night with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Thomas added seven points of her own to go along with four boards and two assists.
Mississippi College finished the game 23-of-53 from the floor, with the majority of their offense coming from Zariah Matthews, who scored 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with four assists.
After the Lady Choctaws used a 9-0 run to go ahead 18-11 at the end of the opening period, the Ragin' Cajuns' offense answered the call with a 58.8 percent (10-for-17) shooting effort in the second quarter to flip the game around and send the home team into the locker room with a 37-28 lead.
Louisiana then outscored Mississippi College, 24-18, in the third quarter with the help of a 13-point effort in the period from Morrison.
The visitors attempted a comeback in the final quarter, pulling within eight points (65-57) with 5:43 to play. However, clutch jumpers from Cournoyer and Hallmon kept the game out of reach and secured the 73-65 victory.
Louisiana returns to action on Friday, Nov. 1, when it hosts Spring Hill College in its final exhibition game. Tipoff from the Cajundome is slated for 6 p.m.
