Sierra Provides Late Game Heroics In @RaginCajunsSOC Draw At South Alabama

10/19/2018 10:26:00 PM | Soccer

MOBILE, Ala. – Junior Erika Sierra's goal in the last minute of regulation lifted the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team to a 1-1 double-overtime draw against South Alabama on Friday night at The Cage.

Louisiana (3-11-3, 2-6-1 SBC) outshot the Jaguars (7-8-1, 5-3-1 SBC) 20-19 in the match. South Alabama had a 13-9 edge in corners on the night.

The tie keeps the Ragin' Cajuns Sun Belt Conference tournament hopes alive as the Cajuns move two points back of Georgia Southern for eighth place in the league.

Freshman Gwen Mummert led Louisiana with six shots in the contest and picked up her first assist of the season, while keeper Mackenzie Lee notched a career-best nine saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

South Alabama got a goal late in the first half when Morgan Cross collected a long pass from Hannah Godfrey and placed a shot in the back of the net in the 42nd minute.

The Ragin' Cajuns outshot the Jaguars 7-6 in the first half but were unable to find an equalizer as the Jaguars took a 1-0 advantage into the break.

In the second half, Louisiana continued the offensive onslaught tallying a 12-8 edge in shots including eight shots on frame.

Sierra evened the contest with 11 seconds remaining in regulation as she buried the rebound from a Mummert header off of the crossbar into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The goal snapped a streak of 473 minutes without a goal for the Ragin' Cajuns.

Lee stepped up big in overtime recording five saves in the final 20 minutes of the contest including a huge stop on a Briana Morris breakaway in the 108th minute to preserve the tie.
