Ragin' Cajuns Ready For Busy Weekend On The Pitch

Louisiana travels to face Nicholls on Friday; hosts Southern Miss on Sunday
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team heads into the weekend with two challenging non-conference opponents on the schedule.
The Ragin' Cajuns (1-1) travel to face Nicholls State on Friday (Aug. 26) in a 4 p.m. match before returning home to face Southern Miss on Sunday (Aug. 28) in a 1 p.m. match at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.
Sodexo is providing free ice cream bars to the first 500 fans in attendance for Sunday's game. The marketing office will be providing vouchers that will be handed out as fans come in the gate.
Louisiana is coming off a week where it set four single-match school-records and tied a school record for goals scored in defeating Alcorn State, 10-0.
The Ragin' Cajuns travel to face Nicholls State in the season opener for the Colonels on Friday. Louisiana defeated Nicholls State in Lafayette last season, 2-0.
"Nicholls always brings a good game. They have always been quality and well coached," head coach Scot Wieland said. "It is an in-state game. It doesn't matter what sport you play, all in-state games are always a battle."
Louisiana hosts Southern Miss (1-0) on Sunday in a key non-conference match. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 1-0 win over Arkansas State of the Sun Belt conference. The Ragin' Cajuns defeated Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. last season, 2-1.
"The challenge right now is all of these teams are preparation for conference," Wieland said. "We are trying to build our system and perfect our system and everyone is trying to do the same thing."
The Ragin' Cajuns are preparing for a season with high expectations as it returns 10 seniors to the team.
Senior midfielder Yazmin Montoya, who was named to the Sun Belt Preseason All-Conference Team, leads Louisiana offensively with two goals and one assist on the season. Senior forward MacKenzie Higgins also has two goals and one assist on the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Lee and sophomore Kristen Eddy have both seen action in the goal this season. Lee has six saves while Eddy has one save on the season.
