South Alabama Shuts Out Cajuns In Series Opener, 5-0

LAFAYETTE, La. – For the second straight Friday the Louisiana baseball team came up on the short end of a pitcher's duel as the Cajuns were shutout 5-0 in the series opener against South Alabama at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
The loss drops the Cajuns to 30-18 on the year and 14-10 in Sun Belt play, while South Alabama improves its league-leading record of 33-17 overall and 18-7 in conference.
Jaguars' starter Kevin Hill allowed just five hits in a complete-game shutout effort with eight strikeouts and three walks. The complete game was the fourth straight in conference play for Hill and improves his record to 9-0 on the year.
Freshman left-hander Gunner Leger (5-4) took a tough loss for the second straight weekend holding South Alabama to two runs on 10 hits in eight innings of work. Leger struck out six and did not walk a batter in his sixth quality start of the season.
"We hit a lot of balls hard all night long. We had some key at bats and we just didn't have nothing to show for it," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Every time they got a flare or a dink and a dunk it fell in. It's the way it goes. But you give a lot of credit to Gunner, I was really pleased with what he was able to do tonight.
"They put the ball in play and that's half the game of baseball. We've got to let that one go, get back out tomorrow and get after it. They're a very opportunistic team. That's how they play, they've played that way all year."
The Jaguars outhit the Cajuns 12-5 in the contest with four players posting a pair of hits on the evening. Louisiana left six runners on base in the game, while USA stranded nine.
South Alabama took an early lead 1-0 in the top of the second on a RBI double down the left field line by second baseman Matt Bolger scoring left fielder Adam Ballew from first. Ballew led off the inning with a single to left. Later in the inning, designated hitter Garrett DeGallier singled up the middle to plate Bolger and give the Jaguars a 2-0 edge.
The Cajuns loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third after a single up the middle by shortstop Blake Trahan and walks to second baseman Stefan Trosclair and designated hitter Tyler Girouard. First baseman Greg Davis would leave the bases loaded though as he flew out to deep right field to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, South Alabama threatened putting runners on second and third with no outs, but Leger barreled down and got a pair of pop outs from Ben Gann and Bud Collura and made a nice play on a comebacker up the middle by Ballew to end the threat.
The Jaguars added three more runs in the top of the ninth on RBI singles by Gann and Collura and a sac fly by Ballew to make the final 5-0.
The two teams return to action tomorrow at 6 p.m. as freshman right-hander Evan Guillory (3-0, 4.34 ERA) takes the mound for the Cajuns. The Jaguars will give junior right-hander Austin Bembnowski (2-3, 3.51 ERA) the nod on the mound.
