LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team saw its ninth inning rally come up short as the Cajuns fell 4-3 to South Alabama Saturday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
The loss is the third straight for the Cajuns who fall to 30-19 on the season and 14-11 in Sun Belt play. The Jaguars continue to lead the conference with a 34-17 overall record and a 19-7 league mark.
Freshman right-hander Evan Guillory posted his fifth quality start of the season in a no decision limiting the top-ranked offense in the league to two runs on seven hits in seven innings with a strikeout.
Junior reliever Will Bacon (3-2) was handed the loss for the Cajuns after giving up two unearned runs on two hits in 0.2 innings. Bacon had two strikeouts and a walk in the outing.
USA's Ben Taylor picked up his sixth win of the year tossing 2.2 innings in relief. Taylor held the Cajuns to one run on one hit with three strikeouts, a walks and hit a batter.
"Give them credit. They answered back. We scored, they answered," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Guillory pitched a great game for us. Gave us every opportunity to win, but when you match pitching and defense it comes down to timely hitting. They got the timely hit and we didn't."
South Alabama edged out the Ragin' Cajuns in hits, 10-9. Catcher Jared Barnes had a game-high three hits with an RBI and scored a run.
Junior second baseman Stefan Trosclair equaled a career-high with three hits including a double on the evening. Left fielder Kyle Clement also had a pair of hits with a double, while designated hitter Tyler Girouard reached four times in the contest going 1-for-1 with three walks and an RBI.
Louisiana broke a scoreless tie and grabbed its first lead of the series in the bottom of the fifth. Centerfielder Joe Robbins led off the inning with a single through the right side of the infield and then moved to second on a sac bunt by shortstop Blake Trahan. In the next at bat, Clement singled up the middle to score Robbins from second and give the Cajuns a 1-0 lead.
The lead would be short lived though as the Jaguars would put runners on the corners with one out in the sixth. Adam Ballew evened the contest on a single to right scoring first baseman Ben Gann from third. South Alabama tried to execute a double steal with runners on the corners later in the inning, but catcher Nick Thurman lured Bud Collura off of third with a snap throw to Guillory to stymie the effort.
South Alabama would take the lead 2-1 in the top of the seventh on a sac fly to center by Ryan Raspino.
The Ragin' Cajuns provided an answer of their own in the bottom half of the inning to even the contest for the second time. Clement drove a one-out double to right and then moved to third on a single by Trosclair. Later inning the inning, first baseman Greg Davis brought home Clement on a bases-loaded suicide squeeze bunt to tie things at 2-all, but the Cajuns would run themselves out of the inning as Trosclair was thrown out at the plate on the play attempting to score from second.
The Jaguars continued the back-and-forth contest in the top of the eighth loading the bases with one out and Bacon on the mound. Bacon would strikeout right fielder Cole Gleason for the second out of the inning, but in the next at bat Barnes dribbled a single down the third base line that hit bag to give South Alabama a 3-2 edge. Bacon then walked Daniel Martinez to bring home the second run of the inning to extend the Jags advantage to 4-2.
Freshman right-hander Dylan Moore came on in the seventh and got Raspino to foul out to first base to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Louisiana loaded the bases after one-out single by Trahan followed by Taylor hitting Clement with a pitch and Trosclair walking. Trahan scored on a sac fly to right by Girouard to cut the South Alabama lead to 4-3. In the next at bat, Davis flew out to right to end the contest.
The Cajuns and Jaguars close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. as it will be both Mother's Day and Senior Day at the "Tigue". Freshman right-hander Wyatt Marks will take the mound for Louisiana. South Alabama will close out the weekend with senior left-hander Jared Gates on the bump.
