LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team enters the weekend in fourth place in the Sun Belt Conference standings as they host eight-place UT Arlington in a three game series at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field starting Friday at 6 p.m.
Game two of the series is slated for 6 p.m. on Saturday, while the two teams close out the weekend with the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
All three games of the series can be heard live on News Talk 96.5 KPEL-FM with Jay Walker making the call. Saturday's contest will be broadcast live on myKLAF-TV and simulcast on ESPN3.com with Dave Schultz providing play-by-play and Kevin Cantrelle adding color. The Cajuns (25-15, 10-7 Sun Belt) are currently a game and a half back of Georgia Southern for second place after taking two of three on the road at Texas State last weekend. Georgia State leads the conference with a 13-3 league record.
Louisiana ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference in both average (.283) and ERA (3.65). Junior Blake Trahan is second in the league in hitting with a .375 average including a team-best 13 doubles and has driven in 22 runs. The Cajuns have five players on the squad hitting over .300 on the season.
Junior second baseman Stefan Trosclair brings a 10-game hit streak into the UTA series. Trosclair posted a 12-game hit streak earlier this season. He also leads the squad with nine home runs and 29 RBI.
The Ragin' Cajuns will go with the all-freshman rotation of left-hander Gunner Leger along with right-handers Evan Guillory and Wyatt Marks for the second straight weekend. Leger and Marks are tied for the team lead in wins with four. All three starters have recorded 35-plus strikeouts on the year.
The Cajuns hold a 23-14 edge in the all-time series with the Mavericks having won seven of the last eight meetings including three of four games last season. Louisiana defeated UT Arlington 6-5 in the 2014 Sun Belt Tournament Championship game to claim its second tournament title in school history.
The Mavericks (17-22, 8-10 Sun Belt) have lost seven of their last ten contests coming into the weekend after dropping a 4-2 decision to Texas A&M on Tuesday. UTA won two of its three games against Troy last weekend winning 15-4 in the opener before pulling out a 10-7 victory in the rubber match to take the series.
UT Arlington is sixth in the league in hitting with a .266 average led by Levi Scott who is hitting .331 with nine doubles, four homers and 31 RBI. Matt McLean is second on the team with a .328 average but only has one extra base hit on the year.
Right-hander Chad Nack (3-3, 4.99 ERA) will make the start on Friday, while left-hander Brad Vassar (2-5, 4.07 ERA) has been tabbed to take the mound on Saturday. Joel Kuhnel (2-1, 3.31 ERA) will make the start in the series finale for UTA.
Following the series with the Mavericks, the Cajuns open their second straight five-game week on the road at Nicholls State on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
