LAFAYETTE, La. – The fifth-ranked Ragin' Cajuns baseball team picked up its tenth straight win Friday night defeating Georgia State 8-3 in the series opener in front of 3,729 at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
The win moves Louisiana to 20-2 on the year and 4-0 in Sun Belt Conference play. Georgia State falls to 10-12 overall and 1-3 in the league.
"We just had to give our hitters time," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Our hitters are going to wear down the opposition. We were able to stay patient, and that helped us."
Junior Austin Robichaux moved to 4-1 on the season limiting a highly-ranked Panthers offensive attack to one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. Robichaux retired 18 of 20 batters after giving up his second hit of the evening.
"After the ball left the park, Austin really shifted gears," Robichaux added. "The guys in the middle of their order can really hit, but we did a good job pitching for the most part. The key is to keep the people in front of and behind them off base. We did that tonight."
GSU starter Kenny Anderson fell to 2-2 after giving up five runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Offensively, the Ragin' Cajuns posted nine-plus hits for the 13th straight game outhitting Georgia State 10-3 in the contest. Caleb Adams was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two RBI and scored three runs. Adams also extended his streak of reaching base to 16 games.
In the bottom of the first, Adams gave the Cajuns runners on second and third with two outs after his single down the left field line. In the next at-bat, Ryan Wilson drove a double to right field to plate two runs and give Louisiana a 2-0 edge.
Nic Wilson cut into the Ragin' Cajuns lead in the top of the second as he sent a towering solo home run over the fence in left for hit conference-leading ninth home run of the year.
After two scoreless innings, Adams gave the Cajuns a 4-1 lead in the fifth sending a two-run blast to right for his third home run of the season.
Blake Trahan plated Jace Conrad in the bottom of the sixth on ball hit to short to make the score 5-1. Conrad was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then moved to third after a Greg Davis single and a Nick Thurman sac bunt.
Louisiana broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh scoring three runs on two hits. A Conrad two-run single highlighted the scoring in the inning.
Georgia State added one run in the eighth on a RBI groundout by Chad Prain and one run in the ninth on a ball hit to short by Jody Stone to make the final 8-3.
The Cajuns and Panthers are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Tigue as team looks to win its seventh straight series. Junior Carson Baranik will make the start for Louisiana. Baranik is 4-0 on the year with a 0.70 ERA and 30 strikeouts.
