LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns soccer team picked up another point on Friday night, drawing with Southern University 1-1, at the Ragin' Cajuns soccer facility.  The Cajuns got a goal from freshman Annika Schmidt in the first half, but a bizarre goal in the second half tied the game for Southern.

"We have to score," head coach Scot Wieland said after the game.  "You can possess all you want, you can shoot all you want, but you have to put the ball in the net."

The overtime-game marks the third in a row for the Cajuns, the most consecutive games to reach overtime in school history.

Kendall Graham was the goalkeeper of record for the Cajuns, pushing her record to 0-2-2 on the season. Cory DeMarco replaced Graham in the second half.

It was all-Louisiana in the later part of the game, outshooting the Jaguars 35-5, but Southern goalkeeper Kerrin Hall came up with 12 saves, holding the Cajuns to just the one goal.

The Cajuns got their goal in the 30th minute, when Schmidt volleyed a long forward pass from Claire Ruehle past Hall and taking a 1-0 lead. It was the third straight game that the Cajuns scored first.

Southern would tie the game up just over 30 minutes later.  Shelby Carbin sent a long shot on goal, which took an awkward bounce over Graham's head and into the net.

Freshman forward Yazmin Montoya set a school record with 14 shots in the game, passing Stephanie Lynch's nine, which was recorded on Sept. 9, 2007 against Houston.  Montoya put relentless pressure on the net but couldn't get the right bounce and came up empty.

The Cajuns 35 shots in the game tied the second most all-time, set on Sept. 24, 2002 vs Nicholls State, but aside from Schmidt's first career tally, they could not find the back of the net.

"The girls played well," Wieland said.  "They possessed the ball and controlled the whole game, but they just couldn't score.  As a team our goal was to possess the ball better and get more shots. We did that, we just couldn't find the back of the net."

The Cajuns will be back on the pitch on Sunday afternoon, when Northwestern State comes to town for a 1:00 p.m. showdown.  It is game four of a five game homestand for Louisiana, which will finish up next Friday, September 6 against Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m.
