LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team fell to South Alabama, 4-2 on Thursday, snapping a four-match winning streak and falling to 8-6-2 overall and 5-2-0 in Sun Belt Conference matches. Freshman Yazmin Montoya continued her success as of late, scoring both goals for Louisiana, but two goals in the first 20 minutes kick-started South Alabama's four-goal output and past the Cajuns.
"We were not at our best tonight," Wieland said after the game. "South Alabama came out strong and we never totally recovered, credit to the home team. Our focus is on Troy at home on Sunday now."
The Jaguars were early benefactors of a penalty kick, scoring the games first goal in the eighth minute. The Sun Belt Conference scoring leader, Lauren Allison beat starting keeper Cory DeMarco to make it 1-0 early in the match.
South Alabama kept their foot on the gas, adding to their lead ten minutes later when Nini Rabsatt-Smith scored her second of the season. Rabsatt-Smith beat DeMarco with a header off a corner kick from Clarissa Hernandez, making it 2-0 in the 18th minute.
The Cajuns would also benefit from a penalty kick in the match, Montoya specifically. Montoya found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 30th minute of the game, cutting the Jaguars' lead in half.
Allison wasn't done with her night. She added her second of the contest in the 53rd minute, making the Cajuns pay for a turnover. Jordan Duncan intercepted a pass in the Cajuns' zone and passed it to Allison, who scored on a shot from 10-yards out.
Allison would complete the hat-trick in the 71st minute. She split two defenders on the right side of the box and beat second-half keeper Kendall Graham, low to the left post.
Montoya would give the Cajuns a second goal, but not until the final minute of the game. She fired a last-ditch effort from the 18-yard mark, finding the back of the net for her 12th of the season.
Her for points on the night adds to her school record with 29 points this season and she now has sole possession of the top spot for most goals in a season with 12.
Cory DeMarco was the keeper of record, falling to 7-3-0 on the season.
The Cajuns lost their first game since Sept. 29, winning seven of their last nine games.
They will finish up the regular season on Sunday, when they take on Troy at 1 p.m. It is Senior Day at the Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility, honoring three seniors in Shelby Isley, Kendall Graham and Lacey Leitz.
