LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Ragin' Cajuns soccer team will hit the road for two Sun Belt Conference matches this weekend. UL (6-5, 0-1 SBC) opens the weekend with UALR (2-9, 0-2 SBC) on Friday at 7 p.m. before heading to Jonesboro, Ark. on Sunday (Sept. 30) for a match against Arkansas State (7-5, 0-2 SBC) at 1 p.m.
Despite dropping their first SBC game at home against North Texas, the Cajuns regained momentum Sunday, closing out its non-conference slate with a 2-1 win on the road against Northwestern State.
“The one thing that we need to continue to work on going forward is our possession,” head coach Scot Wieland said. “Our work ethic is great and it's going to keep you in the game but when you give up possession too often, especially against good teams, they're going to capitalize on that. We had our first conference game of the season and we're going to continue to get better. The team is excited to go to Arkansas and gain some momentum in conference.”
The Cajuns won in dramatic fashion last Sunday (Sept. 23) when senior Melissa Minton scored a goal in the 81st minute, lifting the team to a 2-1 win at Northwestern State. With the win, coach Wieland picked up his 50th victory at the helm of the Cajuns. Louisiana also finished with a 6-4 record in non-conference play.
Despite losing in overtime, 1-0, against Little Rock last year, the Cajuns have never dropped contests in back-to-back seasons against the Trojans. Louisiana is 4-3 in matches played at both Little Rock and Jonesboro.
With nine regular season matches remaining, the Cajuns have already equaled their goal total from a year ago with 22 goals on 162 shots. UL totaled 22 goals on 237 shots in 2011.
“I'm proud of what we've done so far. Halfway through the season, we've already equaled all of our goals from last year. I am pleased with the offensive production and we're getting a lot more opportunities.”
Hayden Gibson, Erin Lynn and Shelby Isley share the team lead with four goals each. Isley leads the squad in points with 10, while Melissa Minton has two game-winning goals. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Moorefield is the career leader in wins with 23 in her four years as the Cajuns netminder. She has three shutouts in the 2012 season.
The Cajuns rank third in the Sun Belt in goals (22) and points (59). Louisiana is also ranked second in corners (55), fourth in assists (15) and fifth in goals allowed (16).
UALR is currently on a three-game losing streak, picking up their only two wins this year against Lyon and UAPB. Ariel Galletti and Alyson Rohane each have recorded two goals this season to lead the Trojans.
Arkansas State started off the season 7-3 in their first ten matches, however they have lost their last two conference matches against Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. Christina Fink and Loren Mitchell are now tied for the team lead with four goals on the season.
