Brown's RBI Single Helps Cajuns Edge App State In Extra Innings, 5-4

Brasch, three relievers hold SBC's top offense to five hits

BOONE, N.C. – Freshman Colt Brown's two-out RBI single in the 10th inning scored Blaze Rodriguez for the go-ahead run, and Louisiana earned a 5-4 win over App State in the opening game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series on Friday at Smith Stadium.

Cody Brasch and three relievers held App State (28-19, 15-10 SBC) – the SBC leader in average (.319), runs (392) and hits (506) – to five hits with three coming after the first inning. Louisiana (31-19, 13-12 SBC) won for the sixth time in its last seven league games and improved to 13-5 in one-run games and 5-3 in extra-inning contests.

Louisiana led 4-2 after eight innings before App State took advantage of an error and four hit batters to score twice in the ninth inning and knot the game at 4-4. The Mountaineers loaded the bases before Sawyer Pruitt (6-3) fanned Kameron Miller on a full-count, called third strike to send the game to extra innings.

Brown, who finished 2-for-4, delivered his go-ahead single in the top of the 10th after Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice and stole second after Noah Lewis' flyball to left. Lee Amedee drew a walk to put runners on first and second before Brown singled to left off Ethan Wilson (3-2) for a 5-4 lead.

Pruitt tossed the final 1.2 innings and struck out three for the Ragin' Cajuns in earning the victory in his fourth straight decision. Brasch, who retired 14 straight batters, scattered four hits – including singles to two of the first three batters he faced – and struck out two in 6.1 innings for Louisiana before being relieved by Hayden Pearson.

Parker Smith pitched 2.0 innings for Louisiana, striking out a pair of batters and allowing a pair of unearned runs.

Louisiana took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off App State starter Nick DiRito as Brown led off the frame with a walk, stole second and scored on Drew Markle's RBI single to center. The Ragin' Cajuns upped their lead to 2-0 in the third when Maddox Mandino drew a walk, moved to second on Josh Lim's bunt single and scored two batters later on Lewis' sacrifice to right.

Steven Spalitta led off the seventh with a double off DiRito, moved to third on Markle's sacrifice bunt and scored when Donovan LaSalle lifted a sacrifice fly to left.

App State closed the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh as Drew DuPont led off with a single – the Mountainner's first hit since Ethan Puig's one-out single in the first. DuPont moved to second on a walk and third on a fly ball to right before scoring when the Ragin' Cajuns committed the first of two errors in the game.

Charlie Evans followed with an RBI single to left to drive in Nico Soul before pinch-hitter Jalen Seward singled off Pearson to place the tying run in scoring position. Smith came in to replace Pearson and got a pair of fly ball outs to end the threat.

The series resumes on Saturday with first pitch set for 2 p.m. CT. Louisiana will send left-hander Andrew Herrmann (6-2, 3.90 ERA) to the mound with App State countering with right-hander Gage Peterson (7-0, 3.18 ERA).
