Louisiana continues dominance over Panthers improving all-time record to 22-2
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Griffin Hebert launched his first collegiate home run with a solo blast in the fourth inning and the Ragin' Cajuns found creative ways to score early before getting a game-inning, double play with the bases loaded to claim a 4-3 win over Georgia State to complete a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep Sunday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Â
Louisiana (30-18, 12-12 SBC) capped a 5-0 week and won for the 11th time in its last 15 games as it completed its first SBC sweep since blanking Georgia State (22-25, 10-14 SBC) last season in Atlanta. The Ragin' Cajuns improved to 12-0 overall against GSU at home, 22-2 in the all-time series, and extended their overall win streak to 14 games.
Â
Both teams went scoreless through the first two innings before Louisiana got on the board in the third. Drew Markle led off the winning with a double into the left-center field gap off GSU starter Cole Roberts (1-3), moved to third on Mark Collins' bunt single up the third-base line and scored on Noah Lewis' fielder's choice.
Â
Hebert, who replaced Rigoberto Hernandez after he was hit by a pitch in the first inning, led off a three-run, fourth inning by belting the first pitch he saw from Robert for his first homer in a Louisiana uniform for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Colt Brown reached on a single to left and moved to third on Steven Spalitta's bloop double down the left-field line, before scoring on a Roberts' wild pitch. After a walk to Donovan LaSalle, Markle gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 4-0 lead when his grounder to third scored Spalitta.
Â
Ty Roman tossed four strong innings on the mound before GSU began to chip away at the lead. A two-out single by Nick Garagozzo and walk to Carter Bailey allowed leadoff hitter Wills Maginnis to single up the middle to drive in the Panther's first run of the game and chase Roman for Sawyer Pruitt.
Â
Pruitt got John Beverley to ground out to third to end the frame before GSU cut the deficit in half in the sixth. A one-out double by Wesley Bass and single to left by Hunter Carlson allowed pinch-hitter Jae Williams to line an RBI single to left to close to within 4-2, but Pruitt would get out of the jam after retiring Adam Haber on a ground ball before Brown picked off Carlson at third to end the threat.
Â
Beverley, GSU's top hitter entering the weekend and SBC co-leader in steals, broke out of an 0-for-10 slump in the series by reaching on a two-out single, stole second, and scored when he stole third and raced home on a throwing error.
Â
The Panthers threatened in the ninth after pinch-hitter Brandon Davis led off with a single and moved to second on Lucas Grantham's sacrifice bunt. Tyler Papenbrock replaced Hayden Pearson as Louisiana's fourth pitcher of the game and was greeted by Maginnis, who hit a single off the glove of Rodriguez into shallow left field to put runners on the corners.
Â
Beverley was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Papenbrock got Cole Griffith to hit into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to secure Louisiana's 12th one-run victory of the season.
Â
Pruitt (5-3) earned the win after tossing 1.1 innings in relief with a strikeout. Pearson pitched 2.1 innings for the Ragin' Cajuns before Papenbrock got the final two outs for his second save of the year. Roberts tossed 6.0 innings for Georgia State and allowed five hits with five strikeouts. Will Bartkoski pitched 2.0 hitless innings in relief.
Â
Maginnis, Griffith and Bass had two hits each to lead GSU's 11-hit attack. The Panthers left nine runners on base.
Â
Louisiana will wrap up its six-game homestand and midweek schedule on Tuesday when it plays host to former SBC rival New Orleans in a 6 p.m. contest. The game will be available on ESPN+ with fans able to listen locally on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
