Louisiana issues season-highs in walks, HBPs in midweek finale
Â
Mile Curley recorded two hits and drove in three runs as New Orleans (21-30) overcame five errors to win its second straight game against Louisiana (30-19) in the first meeting between the in-state programs since 2019.
Â
Louisiana took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning before the Privateers answered with two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to move ahead, 6-4. The Ragin' Cajuns rallied in the bottom of the ninth as Noah Lewis and Lee Amedee reached on one-out singles, and Colt Brown delivered a game-tying triple to even the score at 6-6.
Â
UNO prevented further damage as Eli Tidwell threw out Brown at the plate, and Steven Spalitta was caught stealing to end the inning.
Â
In the 10th, the Privateers drew two walks and added a hit batter to load the bases. After a strikeout, Owen Smith was hit by a pitch to force in the go-ahead run. Dathan Cummings followed with a two-run single off Louisiana reliever JR Tollett (4-4), scoring Curley and Kruise Newman.
Â
Louisiana put two runners aboard in the bottom half on a Maddox Mandino single and a walk to Donovan LaSalle, but UNO turned its nation-leading 56th double play before Lane Alack induced a game-ending groundout.
Â
Garret Carter made his first Division I start for Louisiana, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing three runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Skylar Jones (3-1) earned the win for New Orleans.
Â
The Cajuns set season highs in both walks (10) and hit batters (7) in having their five-game winning streak snapped.
Â
Brown finished with three RBIs to pace Louisiana, which was limited to three hits through eight innings before finishing with seven.
Â
Louisiana returns to Sun Belt Conference play Friday, traveling to Boone, N.C., for a three-game series against App State. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT, followed by a 2 p.m. CT start on Saturday and a noon CT finale on Sunday.
