Ragin' Cajuns to face Texas State at 10 a.m. at Riddle-Pace Field
TROY, Ala. – A fast start, a nerve-wracking finish, and a gutsy performance on the mound from Andrew Herrmann helped Louisiana claim a 5-4 victory over No. 24-ranked Coastal Carolina in an elimination game in the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship at Riddle-Pace Field.
Â
Louisiana (37-22) advanced to face Texas State (36-22) in a 10 a.m. start on Saturday in Troy. A win by the Ragin' Cajuns would force a second game between the teams at 1:30 p.m. The games are slated to be broadcast on ESPN+, with fans able to listen locally in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Â
With constant rain in the Montgomery area, league officials made the decision to split the bracket up with Louisiana and Coastal Carolina (37-21) moving an hour south to Troy for their elimination game.
Â
Louisiana broke open a scoreless game with a four-run third inning, beginning with Colt Brown's two-run double off the right-field wall before Drew Markle followed with a two-run single to right off Coastal starter Ross Norman (6-6).
Â
The Cajuns took a 5-0 lead in the fourth when Maddox Mandino lifted a two-run, RBI double off the right-center field wall to drive in Blaze Rodriguez.
Â
JR Tollett pitched 3.0 solid innings in his first start since March 31, striking out three batters and inducing a pair of double plays. Tollett scattered six hits and kept the Chanticleers off balance until an RBI double by Rex Watson and single by Trace Mazon cut the lead to 5-2.
Â
Herrmann (7-4), who threw 87 pitches against the Chanticleers last Friday and 90 pitches in a 12-11 win on Wednesday, tossed 5.0 innings in his first relief outing of the season. The southpaw limited Coastal to four hits and struck out nine batters with no walks in a 77-pitch performance that saw him become the first UL left-hander to record 100-plus strikeouts in a season since Justin Gabriel in 2002.
Â
He retired the Chanticleers in order in the sixth inning with a pair of strikeouts before striking out the side in the seventh. Herrmann's 5.0-inning stint increased his season total to 102.2 innings on the season – the first UL pitcher to log 100 innings in a season since Colten Schmidt in 2018.
Â
Herrmann gave up back-to-back doubles, along with a one-out RBI single by Mazon in the eighth, before fanning Blagen Pado and pinch-hitter Domenico Tozzi to close out the frame.
Â
Cody Brasch pitched a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts for his sixth save of the year, getting Walker Mitchell looking at a called third strike after the Chanticleers put the tying run in scoring position.
Â
Mandino and Brown had two hits each to lead Louisiana, which was outhit, 11-6 for the game, but improved to 16-6 in one-run games on the season.
Â
Blake Barthol led Coastal at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Mitchell was 3-for-5 with two doubles for the Chanticleers, who dropped their fourth of five games against the Ragin' Cajuns in nine days.
Â
Norman took the loss for the Chanticleers after allowing five runs – four earned – on five hits in 4.0 innings of work. Colby Richardson, Daniel Parker and Ryan Lynch combined to hold Louisiana to one hit over 5.0 scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts.
