Lewis, Collins lead 15-hit attack; Cajuns to face Coastal Carolina at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Freshman Noah Lewis went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, and Louisiana tied a season-high with 15 hits in earning a seven-inning, 15-5 victory over Marshall on Tuesday in the opening game of the Sun Belt Baseball Championship at DABOS Park.
Â
Louisiana (35-21), the No. 7 seed in the 10-team field, advanced to face No. 2-seeded Coastal Carolina in the double-elimination portion of the bracket on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. The game will be available on ESPN+ with fans able to listen in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network.
Â
Cody Brasch (6-2) allowed an unearned run in the first inning before holding Marshall (23-32) to three hits overall in 5.1 innings of action. Parker Smith tossed the final 1.2 innings for the Ragin' Cajuns, who claimed their first run-rule victory in the SBC Tournament since a 12-2 win over South Alabama on 2013.
Â
The Thundering Herd, who eliminated Louisiana in last season's tournament, got off to a quick start as Tyler Kamerer was hit by a pitch with one out in the first inning and scored from first on the first of three Louisiana errors in the game.
Â
Louisiana would quickly strike back in the bottom half of the frame as the first five batters reached base off Marshall ace Bryce Blevins (8-5). Blaze Rodriguez and Lewis led off the inning with singles before Lee Amedee's hard liner to center field drove in Rodriguez and tied the game at 1-1.
Â
Lewis would give Louisiana a 2-1 lead after Colt Brown reached on an error and Drew Markle followed with an RBI single to plate Amedee for a 3-1 cushion.
Â
The Cajuns added three runs in the third inning for a 6-1 lead as Owen Galt laced an RBI single off the top of the wall in left field before Mark Collins belted a two-run double for his second of three hits on the afternoon.
Â
Louisiana added its third, three-run frame in the fifth after Collins reached on an infield single and Rodriguez drew a one-out walk. Lewis followed with his second home run of the year – a 422-foot blast to left-center field – to give Louisiana a 9-1 lead.
Â
The Cajuns would close it out in the seventh after Rodriguez led off with a walk and moved to third on Lewis' second double of the season. Amedee would drive in Rodriguez on an RBI grounder to first before Brown – the lone starter to not record a hit through the first six innings – lined a single to right to seal the win.
Â
Brasch allowed three base runners to get into scoring position after the Thundering Herd scored in the first inning. The right-hander struck out one batter and walked a pair in an 83-pitch performance.
Â
Smith held the Thundering Herd hitless over his 1.2-inning stint.
Â
Blevins scattered 10 hits and allowed six runs in 3.0 innings of work for Marshall. Jackson Halter, Mason Onate and Cleary Simpson recorded hits for the Thundering Herd while Evan Bottone, the team's leading hitter (.387) entering the game, was held to 0-for-3 with a walk.
