Markle, Papenbrock Lead Cajuns Past A-State, 11-5

Louisiana clinches first SBC road series; series finale set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
Markle's triple off reliever Jelie van der Lelie (2-2) cleared the bases after a Colt Brown single, a walk to Steven Spalitta and a Donovan LaSalle single. A walk to pinch-hitter Josh Lim, an RBI single by Noah Lewis and Lee Amedee's two-run chopper over the head of third baseman Raul Torres capped the six-run frame.
Markle also hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning, and finished with a career-high five RBI.
Tyler Papenbrock (2-0) delivered a season-high 5.1 innings of scoreless relief after entering with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning with Louisiana trailing 5-3.
Papenbrock got Evan Griffis to pop out to shallow left field and induced a comebacker by Kaden Amundson that started a 1-2-3 double play to escape the jam. Papenbrock, whose previous longest relief outing was 1.2 innings, allowed five hits and one walk while striking out key outs late. Van der Lelie took the loss, allowing four hits and five runs with three walks in one inning.
Andrew Herrmann started for Louisiana (25-17, 9-11 SBC), allowing seven hits and five runs over four innings. Papenbrock allowed two hits in the 10th before giving way to Parker Smith, who induced a game-ending double play off the bat of pinch-hitter Aiden Houseworth — the fourth double play turned by the Cajuns.
Louisiana matched its season high with 15 hits. Freshman Noah Lewis recorded a career-high four hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Amedee added three hits and three RBI, while Brown finished with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI. LaSalle and Markle each collected two hits.
Arkansas State (25-17, 9-11 SBC) was led by Ashton Quiller and Amundson, who had two hits apiece. Jack Nelson started and worked three innings, allowing four hits and three runs (one earned). Tyler Weimer followed with three innings, giving up four hits and two runs.
Louisiana trailed 1-0 when Brown led off the second with a solo home run to left-center off Nelson. Markle drove in Blaze Rodriguez four batters later with his two-run blast to left.
The Ragin' Cajuns fell behind 5-3 after five innings before an RBI single by Brown in the sixth and bases-loaded walk to Amedee in the seventh knotted the game at 5-5 and set up Louisiana's fourth extra-inning victory of the season.
Louisiana will look for its first three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep of the season on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
