Senior tosses nation-leading third complete game of season; rubber game set for 1 p.m. Sunday
Â
Herrmann (4-2) delivered 108 pitches, including 81 strikes, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out nine. He worked through a 24-pitch ninth inning, surrendering a two-run home run to Kyle Morrison, but struck out the side to seal the win.
Â
The rubber game of the three-game series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. Louisiana (20-15, 5-9 SBC) will send left-hander Ty Roman to the mound, while Southern Miss (25-10, 8-6 SBC) is expected to counter with right-hander Thomas Crabtree.
Â
Louisiana fell behind 2-0 in the fourth inning after Davis Gillespie connected on his ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot that scored Joey Urban, who reached after being hit by a pitch for the Golden Eagles' first baserunner of the game.
Â
The Cajuns responded in the fifth, capitalizing on defensive miscues to score four unearned runs and take the lead. Colt Brown and Steven Spalitta opened the inning with walks before Camden Sunstrom's errant throw to third allowed both runners to advance. Blaze Rodriguez followed with a walk to bring in Louisiana's first run. After Donovan LaSalle lined out, Spalitta scored on Drew Markle's fielder's choice.
Â
Lee Amedee added a two-run single off reliever Camden Clark, scoring Lewis and Markle to give Louisiana a 4-2 advantage.
Â
Louisiana extended its lead with three runs in the sixth inning. Brown reached on a bunt single with two outs, and Spalitta followed with a two-run home run to right-center field – his third of the season – for a 6-2 lead. Lewis then bunted for a hit and later scored on Rodriguez's RBI double.
Â
The Cajuns added another run in the seventh on a double-play ball to push the margin to 8-2 entering the ninth.
Â
Herrmann was dominant through eight innings, with Gillespie's home run the lone blemish. He threw just 17 balls over his first 84 pitches.
Â
Southern Miss mounted a late push in the ninth as Morrison's two-run homer cut the deficit to 8-4. The Golden Eagles added two more baserunners, but Herrmann struck out Ben Higdon and Tucker Stockman to finish the game.
Â
Amedee, Spalitta and Rodriguez each recorded two hits for Louisiana, which finished with 10 hits. All three players drove in two runs.
Â
Outside of the two home runs, Herrmann allowed only three singles. He previously recorded complete games this season against UC San Diego and South Alabama.
