Louisiana opens five-game week beginning Tuesday against UTRGV
Jake Bennett, Urim Ibrahim, Ben Tryon and Dylan Cupp each homered for Dallas Baptist (9-7), which avoided its first three-game home sweep since its inaugural series in the ballpark in 2013.
Louisiana (12-4), which saw its five-game win streak snapped, struck first in the opening inning. Donovan LaSalle doubled on the game's first pitch, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Drew Markle's sacrifice fly to center.
DBU answered immediately as Bennett tied the game with a solo home run to left off Louisiana starter Sawyer Pruitt before Tryon doubled with two outs and scored on Ryan Martin's RBI single to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead.
Ibrahim extended the advantage to 3-1 in the second inning with his first home run of the season and later added a two-out RBI double in the fourth to make it 4-1.
Louisiana threatened in the third after Markle drew a leadoff walk and Lee Amedee singled to put runners on the corners. DBU starter Ryan Borberg struck out Rigoberto Hernandez before Amedee was thrown out attempting to steal second and Colt Brown grounded out to end the inning.
The Ragin' Cajuns put together another chance in the fourth when Steven Spalitta singled to center and Kasen Bellard added a two-out infield hit to chase Borberg. Reliever Liam Watt got LaSalle to fly out to the warning track in left to end the frame.
An error in the fifth led to two unearned runs for DBU when Tryon belted a two-run homer to right-center off Louisiana reliever Hayden Pearson. The Patriots then broke the game open in the sixth, sending 10 batters to the plate in a six-run inning capped by Cupp's two-out grand slam.
Pruitt (2-1), who entered the game without allowing an earned run in 19.2 innings, struck out four and allowed six hits over 4.2 innings. The freshman surrendered five runs, four earned, in a 65-pitch outing.
Watt (1-1) earned the win for DBU, limiting Louisiana to two singles over 3.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Louisiana returns home for a five-game week beginning Tuesday against UTRGV in a 6 p.m. contest at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park. The Ragin' Cajuns then host McNeese on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before opening Sun Belt Conference play Friday with a three-game series against South Alabama.
