Cajuns swipe eight bases as head coach Matt Deggs earns 200th UL win
Lee Amedee, Donovan LaSalle, Drew Markle and Colt Brown each had two hits to pace the Cajuns' offensive attack, with Amedee stretching his hitting streak to nine games, while LaSalle increased his streak to eight.
The Cajuns benefitted in their running game by swiping eight bases in the contest – all within the first three innings of the game – with Amedee and Markle leading the way with two steals each. LaSalle, Rigoberto Hernandez, Steven Spalitta and Brown – who extended his hit streak to eight games – stole one base each.
Ty Roman (1-2), making a designated short start, worked 3.1 innings for his first win as a Cajun. Roman allowed six hits and three runs with one walk and four strikeouts in his 65-pitch outing. Parker Smith, the fourth of five Cajuns' pitchers, had three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.
The Vaqueros (7-10) had 13 hits in the contest, with second baseman Thomas Williams pacing UTRGV with three hits and two runs scored. Easton Moomau drove in three runs to pace UTRGV in that department.
The Vaqueros got on the board first, getting three hits, highlighted by Julius Ramirez's RBI single, before the Cajuns (13-4) struck back with two in the bottom of the first. Markle had a bunt single with one out and, after Amedee walked, the two moved up on a double steal.
Hernandez had an RBI groundout before Brown doubled home Amedee to give the Cajuns a lead they would not relinquish.
The Cajuns added four more runs in the second, highlighted by an RBI single by Markle and Amedee's double down the left field line, and plated two more in the third, with runs scoring on a wild pitch and Griffin Hebert's RBI groundout.
An RBI single by Chayton Fischer and an Ethan Edinger sacrifice got two runs home for the Vaqueros in the fourth before Garrett Carter got the final two outs.
Louisiana got a run back on Amedee's second hit of the game, but UTRGV touched Carter for two more runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 9-5. The Cajuns scored twice in the seventh before the Vaqueros got four straight hits in the ninth inning for the final score.
The win was the sixth in the last seven games for the Cajuns, who will open Sun Belt Conference play when they host long-time rival South Alabama for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
