Louisiana pushes match deep into singles play before nine-match win streak halted
LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Tennis team fought deep into singles play on Sunday, March 29 but ultimately came up just short, falling to Texas State, 4–2, on the closing day of ITA College Tennis Weekend at Cajun Courts.
Louisiana (11-4) earned two points in singles play but was unable to overcome Texas State's three singles victories and a key doubles point. The result snapped the Ragin' Cajuns month-and-half long, nine-match win streak.
Texas State (10-6) secured the early momentum by winning the doubles point.
The Bobcats opened with a 6–1 win on court three. Louisiana answered when Angelique Berrat and Nina Krecklenberg captured a 6–4 victory at No. 1, their team-leading eighth doubles triumph. Texas State, though, clinched the point moments later with a 6–4 decision on court two.
In singles play, the Cajuns collected two victories to keep the contest tight.
Ana Martinez Vaquero registered Louisiana's first point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Stoney Cooks on Court 5 to even the match at 1-all. Later on, Marilou Bressan delivered a steady performance on Court 3, defeating Tadiwa Mauchi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 to draw another match tie, knotting the score at 2-2.
Texas State secured the match by completing comebacks on Courts 2 and 4. Charlotte Roesch rallied past Martina Della Gora in three sets, while Ireland Simme defeated Safia Zenbi, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, to clinch the match.
The contest on Court 1 between Louisiana's Angelique Berrat and Texas State's Emily Niers went unfinished with Berrat leading the second-set tiebreak, 5–0, after dropping the opening set 6–4.
Vaquero extended her win streak on singles Court 5 to seven matches, improving to 7-1. Berrat's battle back on Court 1 kept her unbeaten streak at the top position, which dates back to February 14, intact
