Ragin' Cajuns faced rugged field in final tuneup before SBC Championships

CARROLLTON, Texas – UL's golf team will be aiming for consistency in its final outing of the regular season Monday and Tuesday when the Ragin' Cajuns join 12 other teams in the prestigious Maridoe Intercollegiate Tournament.

The 54-hole event is the last tournament for the Cajuns prior to the Sun Belt Conference Championships, and UL coach Theo Sliman is hoping his team uses the Maridoe as a springboard to success in the April 27-30 league title event at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss.

"It's our last chance in the regular season," Sliman said of the Maridoe event, "and the field is absolutely top shelf. It may be the strongest field we'll see all year, so it's going to be great preparation for us. Plus it's one of the hardest courses we'll play all year with the severity of the greens and a lot of penal hazards."

The field includes four teams in the top 20 in this week's national Scoreboard rankings including No. 7 Oklahoma State, No. 9 Arizona State, No. 15 Oklahoma and No. 16 Alabama. Those four teams all finished in the top four in last year's Maridoe tournament, which Oklahoma won by a 16-stroke margin over Oklahoma State.

The rest of the field includes Baylor, Boston College, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State, Sam Houston, UTRGV, UNC Greensboro and host North Texas along with the Cajuns. UL and Mississippi State are the only new invitees to the event from last year's tournament, with the Cajuns making their first appearance in the Maridoe since 2019.

Four players ranked in the individual top 15 – No. 3 Preston Stout of Oklahoma State, No. 12 Ryder Cowan of Oklahoma, No. 13 William Jennings and No. 14 Michael Mjaaseth of Arizona State – will compete this week. Eight of the top 50 in this week's rankings are in the field including UL senior Malan Potgieter, who is No. 44 in the national ranking list.

That field will face a stiff test at the 7,569-yard par-72 Maridoe Golf Club near Dallas. The field played the course at a 76.07 stroke average last year, more than four shots over par, including a final round 77.27 stroke average for the entire field. The average team finish last year was more than 34 strokes over par.

The Cajuns should be used to a challenging course after their last outing at the Michael A. Marino event at Myrtle Beach, S.C., where they finished at 19-over-par (306-284-293—883) over the Dunes Golf & Beach Club to finish 12th in a 16-team field that included four of the country's top 50 and 11 of the top 100.

"I think our guys put too much emphasis on how tough the course was last week at Myrtle," Sliman said, "and now we need to apply those mental errors from last week and embrace the challenge. They know they're capable of doing that, and they'll have to because this course demands patience and every club in the bag."

Potgieter remains the nation's only collegian with six top-three individual finishes – no other player in the country has more than four – and added a tie for fourth two weeks ago in his last outing at Myrtle Beach. The Kirkwood, South Africa product holds a 68.77 stroke average and has finished in the top four in eight of his nine tournament outings this year, easily the most top-five finishes in the country. He has one individual championship, that coming at UL's own Louisiana Classics earlier this month at Oakbourne Country Club, and a tie for first at the season-opening Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek in Choudrant.

Fellow senior Jean Louis du Plessis (73.33), junior Carter Schmitt (second on the team at 73.08), sophomore Jay Brooks (75.24) and freshman James Holtsclaw (73.81) make up the rest of the UL lineup. Schmitt has finished second behind Potgieter in five of the Cajuns' nine tournaments this year.

Teams will play 36 holes Monday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, and a final 18 holes on Tuesday also at 8 a.m. Live scoring is available at Scoreboard.clippd.com.
