Cajuns paired with UTRGV, Sam Houston in final round

CARROLLTON, Texas – UL's golf team stands ninth in a power-packed 13-team field and seventh-ranked Oklahoma State holds the team lead, but the real winner in Monday's first two rounds of the Maridoe Intercollegiate Tournament was the Maridoe Golf Club itself.

The 7,569-yard par-72 course, known as one of the Southwest's toughest, played at a 76.25 stroke average in Monday's opening round, and then got tougher as the winds picked up in the afternoon and eventually played at more than five and one-half strokes over par (77.59).

"It's rare when you play a college tournament on a course where bogeys on a lot of holes are good scores," said Cajun coach Theo Sliman. "This course already tests every aspect of your game, and the winds were brutal especially in the afternoon. Some of the best teams in the country are shooting over par."

No team broke par during Monday's two rounds, with Oklahoma State shooting an even-par 588 score including a five-over 293 in the afternoon rounds. The Cowboys had the low score in each round, and their 283-293—576 score has them 14 shots ahead of runner-up and ninth-ranked Arizona State.

UL, making its final regular-season appearance prior to the April 27-30 Sun Belt Conference Championships, posted a 14-over 302 in the morning round, tying for seventh, before a 312 in the afternoon's final 18 holes. The 13-team field will play a final 18 holes Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, UL paired with UTRGV (seventh, 603, +15) and Sam Houston (eighth, 607, +19).

Senior Jean Louis du Plessis posted a one-under 71 in Monday's morning round, tying for ninth through the first 18 holes, and his 71-81—152 (+8) score has him tied for 29th with senior teammate Malan Potgieter (74-78—152). Potgieter went into the tournament ranked 44th on the national Scoreboard rankings.

Du Plessis had two birdies and an eagle – one of only three eagles for the entire field in Monday's two rounds – in his first five holes and had a three-under 33 on his first nine Monday.

"It was nice to see Jean Louis get out of the gate with a hot start," Sliman said. "He played very well all day, had a couple of tough breaks in the afternoon, but that's going to be big for his confidence going into the rest of the season."

Junior Carter Schmitt had 79-76 scores and freshman James Holtsclaw posted 78-77, both at 11-over 155 and tied for 40th individually while sophomore Jay Brooks shot 80-87—167 and is in 74th place.

"Our guys have their chests up, there's no sulking," Sliman said. "They see some of the best teams in the country well over par, and they know we're in the back of the pack because we compounded our errors too much. But I'm proud of the fight our guys have shown, they definitely didn't quit and they're looking forward to getting back on the course tomorrow."

Host North Texas is third at six-over 594 followed by Baylor (598), 15th-ranked Oklahoma (600) and 16th-ranaked Alabama (601) in the top six entering Tuesday's final round. Oklahoma State has three of the top four individuals after two rounds, with Ethan Fang shooting 68-72—140 (-4) and national No. 3-ranked Preston Stout shooting 69-73—142 (-2). OSU's Eric Lee and Markus Lam of Boston College are tied for third at 143 and were the only other players to break par Monday.
