International team holds lead heading into final day

TRALEE, County Kerry, Ireland – Malan Potgieter split his two matches Saturday at the 30th annual Arnold Palmer Cup competition, and will look to help his Team International take a second straight Cup victory in Sunday's wrapup singles matches.

The Ragin' Cajun senior from Kirkwood, South Africa, teamed with fellow South African Jack Buchanan of Southern California to take a 3 & 2 win over Ryder Cowan of Oklahoma and Jacob Modleski of Notre Dame in Saturday morning's foursomes (alternate-shot).

In the afternoon matches, Potgieter and Veronika Kedronova of Kent State and the Czech Republic lost to Modleski and Bailey Shoemaker of Southern Cal 2-up in the mixed foursomes (alternate-shot) matches

Those results were part of a tight team competition that will be decided in Sunday's 24 singles matches, 12 men's and 12 women's pairings beginning at 7:30 a.m. IST (1:30 a.m. CDT) on the first and 10th tee of Ireland's prestigious Tralee Golf Club. Team International leads Team USA by a one-point 18.5-17.5 margin entering singles competition at the world's premier international collegiate match-play event.

Potgieter, the first player from the Ragin' Cajun program and the first from a Sun Belt Conference school to take part in the Ryder Cup-style competition, will face Wheaton Ennis of Texas A&M and Team USA in Sunday's seventh of the 12 men's matches at 8:30 a.m. IST (2:30 a.m. CDT).

Potgieter, who was named to both the PING/Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the Golfweek Magazine All-America teams last month, and Buchanan were 2-down to Cowan and Modleski after five holes in Saturday's morning foursomes. But the South African pair rallied to win five straight holes, the 6th through the 10th, with two birdies and three pars to take a 3-up lead.
They lost the 11th hole but got that point back with a par at the 12th, and the teams halved the next four holes with three pars and one birdie to keep the 3-up margin and wrap up the match at the par-three 16th hole.

In the afternoon mixed foursomes, Potgieter and Kedronova won three holes on the front nine, including the par-five ninth hole to make the turn with a 1-up lead. But Modleski and Shoemaker won the 12th and the 13th with birdies. Potgieter won the par-four17th with a birdie to get back to 1-down, but the USA pairing won the par-five 18th with a birdie to win the match.

Team International is looking for its second straight win, taking last year's competition 35-25 at Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, S.C., by winning 15 of the Sunday 24 points in singles competition
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by the golf legend and the GCAA and began play at Palmer's home course at Bay Hill in Orlando in 1997. Palmer, the most iconic and revered figure in the history of golf and himself a former standout collegian and coach, was actively involved in the international event for many years prior to his death in 2016.

Potgieter will play his final round as a collegiate senior Sunday, wrapping up a record-setting year that included three individual wins, a share of medalist honors at the NCAA Athens Regional and an all-time collegiate golf record 93 consecutive bogey-free holes. He became only the fourth Cajun to earn PING All-America status. He was also the first UL player to make the NCAA Championships national field since Matt Trevino in 1996.
